Man... I thought it has the extra R! not sure why.

It's one of my favorite bourbons, and I always have a bottle in the house, so I should know how to spell it.

Some great suggestions, and I appreciate the help across the board.

I might re-suggest the Birthday and see if she goes for it... either that or one of the Four Roses options.

Word on the street is that Pappy's fall release is the first week of November, but November starts on a Thursday, so I'm not sure which day it will be!

As I recall last years release came on Friday November 4th...Since The Liquor Barn gets their "drop" on Thursday's, they didn't have any until Tuesday....which happened to be election day, so by the time they got around to opening the doors "the word" was all over town and they had a near riot at the front door...

SMH, this is what I get for not being "in the know." I'm a lightweight when it comes to drinking. I don't drink much, but I want it to be very good. For YEARS I thought I didn't like bourbon, I usually prefer scotch, straight up, Laphroaig or McCallan, depending on my mood. So, I was with a friend at Bourbon's, she was doing the Urban Trail, so I bought myself a shot of Pappy's. It was ambrosia, and I was wanting a bottle and looking for it, and NOW I find out that the ONLY bourbon that I REALLY like is some collector's item that I am going to have to bribe someone to get?

Crap...huge heartfelt *sigh*

Pappy is a challenge... I keep thinking someone will introduce a competitor for it, but with the aging process, it's going to take a few years.

There are still lots of good options out there... bourbon is a diverse beverage... finding the right one is a fun and delicious challenge.

But this is the one that had me rollin' on the floor..... http://tinyurl.com/9oz7uzb You know the PVW 20 that comes in the red velvet bag? This guy is asking $395.....*FOR THE BAG!!* I'm not kidding! I read his offering very carefully, no mention whatsoever of a bottle of anything coming *in* the bag, just "Up for sale is an original red velvet pouch for Pappy Van Winkle 20 year old. Item is new and in excellent condition! This would make a fantastic addition to any bar display and/or bottle collection." I mean really...c'mon now?

That is crazy. I'm pretty sure I've thrown away one or two of those velvet bags over the years.

Robin the sentence below is copied from wikipedia, not that is it has ever had two r's in our lifetime, but it did at one time. I learned this from Mike Veach at The Filson. Just one of the off the wall facts about Kentucky and the Bourbon industry he collects.

Originally, the product name was spelled “Old Forrester”, with a double ‘r’. The product is reported to have been named after a physician Dr. William Forrester[2] who endorsed its consumption, and the renaming is conjectured to have been a way to avoid direct reference to the physician's name.[1]

Doh! Sorry wrong picture. On topic Prichard's Double barreled is a unique and worthy bourbon. Parker's Heritage is another that might be available...

Prichard's Double Barreled bourbon is what Woodford Double Oaked wants to be when it grows up. If you enjoy a very full flavored bourbon with tons of vanilla, smoke and oak, I highly recommend it.

"Hijack Warning"
We were on our way to the lake on Friday when we stopped at Westport Whiskey and Wine to get some goodies for the cooler. I got some West Sixth IPA, Strong Bow Cider, and O'Fallon Pumpkin Beer. Funny though they didn't sell any wine coolers - snobs. I mentioned to the fellow working there that we were going near Bardstown. I wondered if we should stop at one of the distilleries for something not available in the store. I was thinking the Elijah Craig 20 year or perhaps something at the new Beam visitor's center. He surprised me by suggesting that we stop at the Four Roses facility to see if their "Private Selection Single Barrel" was still available. He said these were 13 & 17 year old single barrels selected by Master Distiller Jim Rutledge and they were only sold at the Bardstown facility and at the distillery in Lawrenceburg. I took note.

A short while later we passed the new Jim Beam visitor's center and Donna, who was mind-melding with her Android device, hadn't yet realized we were no longer on route. I was tempted to pull in but Donna is pretty wise to my ways (and me to hers - I think) and while we still had plenty of time I knew she wouldn't appreciate me hijacking the trip for multiple distillery stops so I went on.

I saw the sign for Four Roses just as I passed it and had to turn around. Donna noticed now and began getting a little edgy so I assured her that I wasn't interested in taking a tour; just wanted to taste and maybe buy a bottle. We were stopped by a guard at the gate where we had to sign in before we were allowed to drive to the visitors center. He warned us to go slow and watch for cows. The warning was hardly necessary as the cows were everywhere along the roads that weaved between the rick houses. We eventually pulled up to a 70s era Bedford stone house and spotted a small "Gift Shop" sign.

The right half of this small rambler was given over to the gift shop with the other half marked “No Admittance.” We were the only customers so we chatted with the friendly Mandy who was the only staff in evidence. She told us about the cows while she gave me tastes of three bourbons. I tried the standard Yellow Label, a small batch, and the regular 12 year single barrel but in reverse order. I was really only interested in the single barrel which was by far the hottest and tastiest. Mandy said that it was indicative of the 13 year private selection. I said that I'd only had Four Roses bourbon once at the insistence of a very perturbed distributor (see Whiskey Roulette). I started to ask her further questions when she quickly admitted that she was not a bourbon drinker. I said that was fine and she could ring me up.

We were chatting as I was preparing to purchase a bottle of the 13 year single barrel when I mentioned I'd heard there was a 17 year as well. Mandy said that it had been sold out for some time. Then her eyes narrowed in thought and she said, "Just a second." She disappeared into the door marked "No Admittance" and we heard voices. My heart started beating a little quicker while Donna and I exchanged wondering looks. Then Mandy popped back out. She was empty-handed. I said, "All gone, huh?" She reached around behind the shelf and pulled out a bottle. "Don't tell anyone! I've been holding this bottle for a customer for a month and I think that's long enough.” I assured her that, I would in fact tell everyone how well I had been treated at Four Roses. She laughed and said for us to send her more customers. We were quickly back on the road and I assured Donna there would be no more detours (I lied – but that's another story).
I'm a bitter drinker....I just prefer it that way

What's the price on the 13 year single barrel?
