The South End Ranch House was on Winkler. As a matter of fact, the original sign is still there, except now its says "Jim and Joe's Liquor."

The Bardstown Road Ranch House was exactly where the Steak 'N' Shake is now.

The Ranch House near the airport was on Preston at Phillips Lane.

Ranch House rocked.

But weren't the drive-ins at Hubbards and across from Bowman Field Frisch's Big Boys rather than Ranch House? Those were the two big competitors, as I recall; and I'm pretty certain that the St. Matthews Ranch House was out at LaGrange Road and US60, where the Mall and Oxmoor would later come to pass.

Yep, I forgot. :D

I DO remember late night, hot-fudge topped, ice cream brownies, though. 8)

And also, Hubbards & Shelbyville was Pryors, which had a darned good Hot Brown, fried chicken, and a treasure chest for the kids.

just spoke to a guy that was a "regular" @ the St. Mathews Ranch House. He said it was right near the Ten Pins Bowling Alley - which was right by the East Drive-In....remember *that one*??!

I don't remember this personally, but when St Matthew's Episcopal church was built on Hubbards between Westport and Massie in the early '50s, it quickly earned the nickname "St. Pryor's" because of proximity to this landmark.

That reminds me of a story I read (Calvin Trillin, I think) about the battle between the Baptist and Presbyterian congregations in Perry, Georgia, where each minister had to carefully time his sermon so that their respective congregants could get first seating at the New Perry Inn for Sunday fried chicken.

The Episcopal version is similar: Sunday services must never interfere with brunch or tee time.

I remember the East very well - used to watch stuff there while playing baseball at St. Mathews Community Center. And later went on dates there when I got old enough to drive. I would have gladly lost my viginity there if only I could have found anyone to cooperate.

Does anyone remember the ice cream place at the southwest corner of Bardstown Rd & Taylorsville Rd? I seem to remember a movie screen where they would advertise ice cream treats.

I remember the drive in at Hikes Lane near Bardstown rd. called The Skyway. Sat where the Kroger is now.

Wait, there was a Sealtest icecream store ar Taylorsville and Brdstown Rd once upon a time. For some reason I remember the sign more than the store. Sat where the Walgreens is now. (I think.)

I remember the Skyway too! :)

The ice cream place I'm thinking of was where the little strip center is now. When you drove up Trevillian towards Bardstown Road, you could see a movie-type screen on the roof, facing the back outdoor seating area.

That's the one I am thinking of although I don't remember the screen. I remember they had a labour strike there when I was about nine and my dad was reluctant to cross the picket line to get me icecream. But he did and my mom was agast that he, being a strong union member, would ever cross a picket line for anything. The things we do for our kids huh?!

and here's one I'll *never* forget!!
A couple of pals and I were at The East to see "The Birds". Next to us was a convertible with 4-5 girls and next to them, another car with a couple of guys. Evidently, those guys got bored with the film and decided to leave. As they were rolling out, rather than hang their speaker back on it's hook, they sort of "tossed" it towards the hanging pole. It swung around the pole and over on to the front windshield of the girls' car. It crashed in to the glass, causing the girls to begin screaming, "the BIRDS, the BIRDS!!"" Fortunately, it didn't break the glass, but gave the girls a fright they'll never forget - - and gave us a laugh *we'll* never forget!

was Waggener/St.Mathews Frisch's ever at that location? I was thinking that they were always at their current location?
