Oh, yeah. It was a 19th century suburb, subdivisions (really!) following the train tracks east. The city limits stretched out to (and included) downtown St. Matthews I think all the way back to when the neighborhood was built. I think much of Crescent Hill is about the same age as the Cherokee Triangle (1890s-early 1900s), while much of the Highlands - especially out from Eastern Parkway - was a decade or two later.

The main reason these "Ends" aren't well-defined is that they're terms only used by folks who don't live there. Most folks I know consider everything west of about 10th Street to be the West End, but the folks I've talked to who are from there say they live in California or Russell or Shawnee. They don't say, "I live in the West End." The distinction between St. Matthews and Middletown is clear and important to some, but mainly only to those who live or work there. I freely admit I have no idea where Okolona and Fern Creek begin and end; it's all the South End to me. But I know there is a distinction and it matters to some.

As a self- proclaimed East Ender- I'd say "East End" is from Mt . Matthews out to the Oldham line any more.

Back to Becky's question:
Good combination of Great food with good beer at the following:
Downtownish:Silver Dollar ( and Sweet Surrender across the street for dessert!)
Eiderdown ( but beer's expensive)

East Endish
Cafe LouLou - either location
Coals
Jack's Lounge

Their online menu doesnt list their tap list though, so who knows?

Really, is that so hard? Even Holy Grale with their ever changing taps gives a representative sample of their tap list that updates once per month.

.

I just discovered this request by Rob as I was looking through this forum. I was just flabbergasted cause I never thought to advertise the draft beer selections on our website. I never think about beer so it was not something I had considered advertising. We are building our website, finally, and I will create an area to post the beer list. How many people will or will not go to a restaurant based on their beer list?

Madeline,
In fairness, know that your results will be very skewed if you go by what this group says...

I won't stay away if I like the food, but in evaluating a restaurant, I consider it a plus if they seem to have put some thought into assembling interesting, varied wine and beer lists. And a distinct minus if the list appears "thoughless," consisting of nothing but industrial brands.

I am with Deb. I am too chicken to post the draft beer selections on this forum.

However I did try a new beer at our restaurant that I fell in love with. It is from Belgium called Stiegle Radler grapefruit beer. It is so delicious. I am probably going to be laughed off as a girly kind of beer drinker but this stuff was really good.

I'm not a beer drinker, Madeline, but that sounds almost good to me. However, I'll probably stick with water as I usually do.

A good beer list draws people in. Whether that means they stay away without it? Thats harder to say. But, by definition, if people are being drawn to the good lists, everyone else is losing a bit.

However, if you list your wines and liquors on your online menu and not your beers, you have told ME to stay away with that choice. I cant speak for anyone else.

I guess the general concept, at least to me, is that if you are selling it in your restaurant, it should be listed on the online menu. Obviously, specials, whether food or drink, wouldnt be, but anything that is regular should be.

Definitely advertise your beer list.

I will generally not go to restaurant that I know does not have satisfactory beer options, and I do get frustrated when I can't see which beers a restaurant has online.

I have (and still do) peak into restaurants when I'm walking around the Highlands for the sole purpose of seeing what's on tap.

I did this in Lexington on July 4. The place I was trying to go for dinner wasnt open. No big deal, the place next door looked interesting, walked in, saw the taps, walked out. Walked two blocks to someplace that had a decent selection.
