Just out of curiosity, what is it you don't like about Sunergos' espresso?

My only problem with Sunergos is that I could never convince them to offer some darker roasted selections. The espresso isn't even an especially dark roast.

Other Southend options to consider: Sister Beans in the old Ehler's on New Cut, and Old Louisville Coffeehouse in the Old Sister Beans  location at Gagel and Manslick.

I like their coffee and beans quite a bit - I didn't say I didn't like their espresso. I was trying to say it's difficult to find perfectly extracted espresso in this community. We are into coffee pretty deep at my house and I have not found anyone in this town who makes "better" espresso than we can make at home ourselves. We caught the bug in Italy a few years ago.

Caffe Classico (already mentioned) is excellent and Tommie makes great espresso drinks.

I really like Quills on Baxter and it's my go-to espresso place when I can't get to Caffe Classico. My favorite is their Cortado - a nice balance between pure espresso or caffe macchiato and a too-milky for me latte or cappucino. It's a good place to read and relax, too.

I thought I was crazy for photographing their latte art, but I saw someone else doing same this past weekend.

I agree on Quills, hands down best espresso in town. It has a great texture and hint of chocolate and citrus. It is pretty strong, not watery or thin like some places are. I think Cafe Classico does a really great job as does Blue Dog, the two that I get to the most due to proximity to my house (walking distance).

I can't believe I failed to mention Blue Dog. I believe they use Illy coffee - at least they use Illy mugs. 8)

It's walking distance for us too, Ned ... we must be neighbors!

It would be a bit of a haul, but the new Heine Brothers on Blankenbaker is a very nice space, and very quiet (except on Sunday AM when it's full of SECC revelers).

I recommend it.

Yes Robin, I believe that Classico uses Illy too which is probably why I/we like them both. We live near El Mundo, so Classico is a bit closer but still a pretty short walk to Blue Dog as well.

Although Classico also heavily advertises Julius Meinl coffee from Vienna. That's an interesting question. Whoever gets there first, let's ask Tommie.

We live a little closer to Blue Dog, but either way is doable on foot.

Yeah all the posters in Classico are for the Meinl it just seems like I remember the packets of sugar, and sugar substitutes being Illia, but I could be way off base. Whatever theyre serving, it is good with me.

I agree with Mark. Having had Italian coffee and lived where I could get Intelligentsia every day, I am spoiled. My Silvia gets a workout less often than it used to, but the only place I have consistently gotten better shots than I can pull at home is Sunergos. Note the italics, I've gotten good espresso and a properly made cappuccino elsewhere, but not regularly.
