Deb, I could recommend our entry level 80 proof Kentucky Single Malt Whiskey called Pearse Lyons Reserve. It is very similar to a Highland Scotch, smooth and very little smokiness. It is double pot stilled in our Forsyth copper stills, and it will only run you about $30. Available all over town.

BTW, our new distillery will be open after mid-September. We'll be the newest stop on the Bourbon Trail, so make sure you go for a visit when you are in Lexington.

One of the few blended scotches that I'll recommend is Great King St. Its a fantastic blend, and just a bit more than Chevis. http://compassboxwhisky.com/greatkingst ... street.php

I love a single malt and don't particularly like blends. That said, unless you know what kind of scotch he really likes, avoid Laphraiog. Laphraiog is my personal favorite, but it is a kick-you-in-the-face, intensely smoky, peaty scotch. The Macallan is almost it's polar opposite, a smooth sipping scotch, excellent and approachable. I keep both around to suit my mood, but I would gift The Macallan.
