I'm of the "tech generation" and have more geeky devices than God himself, but I have to admit this is kind of bad for a few reasons. Have any of you done the iPad bit over at Rocky's in Jeff? I've never been so frustrated trying to find a damned beer in my life.

Sure it was a piece of cake. What was it that made finding a beer frustrating for you?

See there people ? This is the kind of thing that happens when you try to "geek up" something as simple and enjoyable as selecting beer.

Do you have any experience with such an approach, Steve, or are you just being curmudgeonly to continue the persona you've created for yourself?

I'm on your side when it comes to "principles," but my principles don't actually let me speak to the strengths and weaknesses of the approach. Guess I should get over to Rocky's to try it out. I'm curious. And curiosity sure beats the hell out of principled curmudgeondom.

If I had a yacht I might consider naming it the "principled curmudgeondom".
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

I tend not to use these self-help/self-checkout things on the principle that if the establishment isn't paying someone to help me, they should damn-well give me a steep discount for the amount of payroll they're saving.

At most restaurants I wouldn't mind trying the technology. I don't need a waiter at many of the places I frequent for lunch. I would rather just order. I don't even mind getting my own food and drink most of the time. Its not worth the 15-20% most of the time and I wouldn't have to wait.

I just pick whatever the shortest line is. My principles don't get in the way of me getting out the door faster. :)

That's certainly the best system and the one we used too!

+ another 1

Time is the most important factor for my wife and me. If interacting with a human is faster than interacting with a machine, including any possible line, then human's fine with me.
Recently there was a problem with an ATM at a branch of my bank. This was about the third time since 1982 I've gone INSIDE a bank to use a teller for a routine transaction. There was no line but it still drove me a little crazy. It took probably five minutes instead of 60 seconds...

Not to be picking on Steve..hes my buddy, but I cant help but point out a little bit irony here. After all, we are discussing the lack of face to face, human interaction on an online forum...just saying.

I tend to use the self serve so I can pack my own bags. It's part of Brewer's OCD.

I also use the self-serve so I can pack my own bags. Back in college when we had to walk a good distance from the car to the apartment, my buddy and I decided that all the grocery bags had to make it from car to apartment in one trip. As a result, we became very good at packing the items.

When I go to the grocery, I end up with four bags or so. When I go through one of the manned checkout lanes I end up with twice that or more.
