AMAZING!! I mention that the "reviewer" had only negative reviews and a glowing review if Eddie Merlots pops up! Very fishy!!

Amusing... there are a few folks that I haven't seen posting here in a few months that have had words with some of the same owners that got 1 star ratings and are big fans of Eddie Merlots. Just sayin'...

I like Yelp and think that it is a great resource but I also take a one star review with a shovel full of salt. A one star review is usually done by some reactionary goofball who wouldn't know a bad experience from a pleasurable one if it kicked them in the head. Plus, as you guys have noticed, they only use yelp for negative comments.

I mean, you can tell. Another poster was right in that the savvy yelp users can see through this but others sadly, probably won't. But I think the majority of people these days are hip to the anonymity of internet trolling and can spot it quickly.

On another level, I see it as cowardly too. If you have an issue with a place (and I tell people this all the time) the owners WANT TO KNOW so simply tell them. They will accommodate you and make it right. Don't be scared then go hide on the internet and blast someone under a fake name. I think you can tell if a yelp review is BS or not if they have a fake name. They use their real name then I might listen.

For what it's worth, I've never had anything short of a good to great cupcake from Jaime's place, and this is considering most of the time I don't get to her actual store and just buy them second-hand from Heine Brothers on Eastern Parkway. I've still never gotten my greedy face into one of those cherry cordial cupcakes, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it wasn't a seasonal Christmas thing and that one day I'll get lucky.

With my own business I always monitor these reviews. I probably should not say that but as restaurateurs you have to be aware of what customers are posting. With any restaurant, if there is a pattern to the complaints, then it is important to take heed. Believe me we know where we are weak and need improvement.

Personally, when I research a restaurant I use Urban Spoon, Yelp, Google, Trip Advisor.com, Louisville Hotbytes, etc, etc. What I immediately discount are the highly personal experiences. However, I do look for patterns. When I read the yelp review for cupcake shop the negative review does not contribute to a pattern. I would have completely threw that review out and would not have given the reviewer an credibility.

People do see through this stuff.

Thanks Ron! :D Not seasonal , but not planned either. We just do what we have on hand or whatever strikes our fancy for the day.

Bingo.

I grew ever-so-weary of seeing people get their chops busted on H.B. for negatively reviewing a restaurant (did you tell the manager about your problem, did you ask the server to give you a new entree, you're just doing a "drive-by" yada-yada-yada), so as a result I use Urbanspoon...a lot...both locally and when we travel. As Madeline said, I'm looking for patterns and not so much dissecting individual reviews. If a place has "issues" it doesn't take long for them to become apparent.
