The Cordish envy is too much for me to handle. Time for a genuine, locally-brewed indie beer.

Not sure how this turned into a Gordon Biersch thread. I was invited to the GB soft opening tonight and even though I'm slammed with work right now I decided to go at the last minute. We arrived just as the sudden rain let up and were wisked to our table without a wait.

I soon had a flight of the five GB beers in front of me. The Golden Export, Hefeweizen, Czech Pilsner, Marzen, and the Schwarzbier. My opinion of these beers in total is that they have been brewed to be so palatable to the average American that they are only reminicent of the actual beers they are supposed to be. The Hefeweizen actually tasted more authentic than any of the others. I've had quite a few of this style in the last few months. Even before the flight had been delivered I'd ordered a glass of the Czech Pilsener. It was ok but but was an echo of the bitter beers I prefer.

Our flat bread app was tasty and far too much for two people. The cobb salads we ordered turned out to be wedge salads and they were excellent. Donna had the cashew chicken with rice and I had the cajun pasta with chicken, shrimp, and sausage. Like the beers these dishes seemed to be tamed to the point that they would be acceptable to the lowest common demominator. That is not to say they were not tasty in a vague sort of way. But I will not find myself craving them. Nor will I be looking to return to this place. The service was almost too good with every passing serving asking how things were or attempting to take away a partially empty dish. I'm sure this will not be typical.

Compared to the similar establishments at 4th St however, I would say I prefer it to all of them I've been to. Not been to the new Mozzaria. I do miss the Red Star Tavern. I'm not suggesting it is better than Eddie Melots (been there once) or the other high end joints like Theater Square etc. It's not in that league.

It's hard to imagine what the Mellow Mushroom can bring that is not already being done better somewhere else nearby. The pizza will likely not be better than Coals and the beer will likely not be better than half a dozen other places we all could name.

So do we really need another Boombozz? I'll check it out never the less.
I'm a bitter drinker....I just prefer it that way

Funny you should mention that.

GORDON BIERSCH BREWERY RESTAURANT AT RIBBON CUTTING, SATURDAY, MAY 19, 4:30 PM

VIP Reception Immediately Follows

WHO: Mayor Greg Fischer, Gordon Biersch General Manager Dan Potter and other local dignitaries

WHAT: will celebrate the Grand Opening of Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant with a special ribbon cutting ceremony followed by a reservation-only VIP

We just received our invitation to the private V.I.P. reception...apparently we fall into the "other local dignitaries" category. Should be fun.

I guess being the Mayor of Garage Logic has it's perks!

I personally am looking forward to trying Mellow Mushroom because they do offer vegan cheese on the menu.

There is a white sign up near zaxbys with the logos of the businesses that will be located in the area behind zaxbys. Video kitchen, heine bros, sweet and swirly, and mellow mushroom. Looks like 2 Louisville locations. I think they will do great out there!

I am aware that Uncle Maddio's has it...but sometimes you want to go someplace other than a quick-service restaurant and still have the vegan cheese.

The Morel's BBQ wrap is great, BTW, if you haven't tried it yet.

Speaking to the parking problem in St Matt's, I'll do what I always did when frequenting Dutch's.... park at BBC and walk across the street.

Back to Mellow Mushroom, I just got word from their Head Shed regarding the St. Matthews shop: "It is slated for the last week of July beginning of August!"

No details on the other Louisville shop at this time except that they do indeed plan to open two in this market.

Walking home from Simply Thai tonight I found this peeping out from behind Dutch's old facade @ the Mellow Mushroom site. Anyone remember Baker Boy?

I saw that Baker Boy sign while taking a walk last night. Didn't know if it was old or just meant to look that way.

The other one is definitely going to be on Blankenbaker across from SE Christian in the plaza where the new Heine Bros is. There's now a sign out front in addition to the information posted earlier about the drawings. It's obviously going to take quite a while for it to open since work hasn't started yet.

The folks at Mellow Mushroom - St Matts have posted a picture of the donut sign on their Facebook page and are requesting info on the signs history. Apparently they were having trouble getting all signed up for the forum here (probably a "real name" issue) so if anyone has any info you might want to reply to their Facebook page...or not....I guess they could do the "read only" thing here.

They need to contact me by Email about joining the forum ... I'll gladly let them in, but we had to discontinue self-registration because the Chinese spammers were getting ridiculous. :P
