We actually have 3 main, but I voted for our top 2.

Farmer's market/ CSA regular for excellence of product, eating local and fair prices for farmers.

Meijer for convenience, some local produce, and best produce/ selection in this part of the East End ( much better than my Kroger) It's walking distance from my house too - Not that I ever walk....

Costco for large quantity items, paper goods, sandwich bread, gourmet foods, cereal, etc.

We love Lotsa, but that tends to be only be once a month due to logistics.

But also the big one with the international focus in the South End, next to Vietnam Kitchen - it's amazing. And one out in Hurstbourne that's supposed to have a lot of Indian stuff.

Deb Hall, Gary F, Jackie and I made a trip through after dinner at VK a couple weeks ago. This is a don't miss store for ethnic food. Also good is Patel Brothers to the left of Shalimar. Lots of "what is this?" produce. Bulk bags of spices and a ton of other "just like back home" items. If your home is in India.

Gary, thanks for speaking up for Aldi's! We buy a lot of our staples there. Good prices and excellent quality but limited selection. Hubby does most of the grocery shopping and he prefers Meijers, largely because our bank is located inside the store.

Kroger and Meijer because they're nearby, but I also try to get over to Paul's as much as I can. Whole Paycheck is only if I'm in the area.

This survey upset me greatly.

I had 6 or 7 places checked, and it said I had to pick only two.

Why should I have to pick? I like everything!

Robin Garr wrote:I'd like more than two choices since we shop around. I'd say we do most of our shopping at farmers' markets when we can, then with a preference for Rainbow Blossom, Burger's and Lotsa Pasta, because they're local and because they have cool stuff. Valu when we need a bigger store, or Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, even though they're corporate, at least they're cool.

We do hit up Kroger for staples. And yes, as Steve mentions, at least they're union, although I don't see much evidence that it's a strong union. When I asked the clerk scanning 487 cans of cat food individually if she wasn't worried about carpal tunnel, she said, sure, but management won't let them scan one and multiply. Too worried about losing 50 cents to error, I guess. :P

Robin,

I have to ask what do you buy at Trader Joe's? I was so disappointed when I went there after all the hype...... the word claustrophobia comes to mind when I think of that place.....(lots of people and skinny isles) So there must be something good.....What am I missing out on?

I'm sad I had to miss the after dinner excursion!

The wine shop. Specifically, great bargains in lower-price wines (under $15) of unusual interest and value-for-price.

While I do most of my shopping at Meijer and Kroger, that is purely out of location and price. I love TraderJoes for some things and try to make it there about twice a month. Also, now that my son is at Sullivan and we have transportation isues I find my self wandering about Bardstown Rd and Taylorsville Rd more so I have discovered how wonderful Kingsley is for meats and deli items.

You really need to get out more Steve, Louisville really doesn't have any traffic problems compared to most cities.
