Stopped in to try the BBQ at "River Road BBQ" this afternoon. Let's start out by saying that this is a GREAT location...River Rd, right next to the water tower thingie. I'm thinkin' a feller could serve turd sammiches and still make a bit of coin with all the traffic up and down this road. Hell, just the Spandex uniform bike crowd alone could probably make ya enough money to keep the lights on. It was genius grabbing this spot.

Anyway...I pulls in about 1pm and like Mary Anne sez, there ain't no tables...Carry out only. That and the place is small...really small...Like you couldn't swing a dead cat small. Smells pretty good though, nothing at all like dead cat. Anyway, It's the owners, me and a couple of dump truck drivers in the place and I'm feeling a little bit claustrophobic. Let's order and get the hell back on the road. Choice of two sammiches...Brisket and Pulled Pork, except the Brisket is already gone, so the choice is pulled pork or pulled pork. I'll have the pulled pork. Ya get two sides with that. Choices are Slaw, Tater Salad or a small bag of chips...I'll have the Slaw and the Tater Salad. Small talk with the mom and pop (husband and wife) owners while my plate is prepared...REAL nice folks...He plans on adding baked beans to the line-up as soon as he figures out how he wants to prepare them  Plate's ready. Checkout...Mom's got one of those credit card thingies she runs through her cell phone (when she can get a signal, she says). Homie isn't real comfortable with the technology/security but what the hell, these are nice people. Hop back in the car, drive 19 miles back to The Shed...

Survey Sezzzzz......

The Tater Salad was purt' darn good. Nice and chunky, red and white potatoes, celery, etc. 99% sure it's homemade. Could have used some crumbled bacon in it but otherwise, I like.

Slaw... :? ...almost fell into the "WTF" category. A REALLY course cut, pretty much just cabbage, a wee bit of onion, a little caraway (and celery ?) seed and some kind of light vinegary dressing. I vote "do over" on this one.

Sauce...Thin, vinegary, somewhat of a variation on a western Carolina sauce...lots of diced onions in the sauce, which kinda caught me off guard. If it were me, I'd have run a "boat motor" through the sauce to kinda smooth it out a bit. Over all though, pretty good stuff.

Pulled Pork: VERY nice flavor...lots of smoke (Hickory and Cherry I'm told...which co-inky-dinkly is the profile I use). Moist but not over done. A bit too much fat left in the pork for my tastes but I managed to work around that. Didn't detect a whole lot of "rub" or seasoning, which is fine...let the flavor of the meat shine. Overall a very nicely done pulled pork sammich.

Considering I've got Texicans and Big R's right in my back yard, It will probably be a while before I drive 19 miles (one way) for the sole purpose of visiting "River Rd BBQ" but for those of you who live or travel in the area, it's worth checking out...Particularly on on of those nice spring Saturdays.

In this case doing so would have ruined what was already a very acceptable sammich. Seriously lame slaw, otherwise it was all cool.

As an aside...As part of today's BBQ mission from God, I stopped by Stoplight Liquors to try their "back of the house" BBQ only to discover that the BBQ/Cafe part of the business (and only THAT part of the business) is closed and the space for lease: They are in the process of sub-dividing it with a permanent wall and the final space will be 1800sf @ $2400 mos plus $500 kitchen equipment "rental". NO idea how that compares market-wise but thought I'd pass it along.

I was just thinking that a vinegar based slaw would go well on a pulled pork sandwich. In fact, I have never found a cabbage that I didn't like.

Something to add a bit of texture, crunch. That's why I must have pickles and red onion on my pulled pork sandwiches.

The take home lb of pulled pork was absolutely awesome on a nice warm tortilla, a lotta salsa, a little cilantro and a sprinkle of chihuahua cheese. I vote that these nice folks start offering a taqueria option - pulled pork on a tortilla and a side of beans...I would be sooooo happy happy...

MaryAnne,

What a great idea! Do you remember how much a lb is? I may have my husband pick some up up for dinner some time enroute home from downtown.

Tortilla chips topped with nacho cheese, pulled pork, bbq sauce and rub,,jalapenos, and pickled onions is a favorite at our house.

Hey Deb,
Pulled pork is $10/lb
Brisket is $12/lb
He has one of those little portable battery powered balances...Definitely a great stop and grab on your way home kind of place.

Mmmmmm....based on what I'm seeing/hearing the "enroute home" option is probably pretty "iffy". They were sold out -completely- by 2:30pm on Tuesday (I think it was) and they were out of Brisket by 1pm yesterday.

Personally...if it's me...(if you live in the general area I think I recall you mentioning), I'm doing BBQ carryout at Texican's. A LOT better variety/quality:

TEXICAN'S Smoked Meats by the Pound

Pulled Pork 9.99 Lb
Beef Brisket 11.99 Lb
Pulled Chicken 10.99 Lb
Smoked Sausage 9.99 Lb
Cherry Smoked Ribs 8.99 1 Lb

Sides (choice of 9) are $3.25 a pint or $5.99 a quart.

I happen to really like Texican's but their location in Crestwood is not convienient unless you live in that part of Oldham County - tell them to open a Prospect branch. I have stopped at the BBQ place on Frankfort Avenue on the way home - River Road is ideal but I'm usually through there around 6:00.

:? ...Hadn't thought about it until right now but ya'll do live in kind of a BBQ free zone since Vince Staten's closed up shop. Hmmmm...I wonder if that place is still available, I might just be tempted to... :? ...Nahhhhhh, I probably shouldn't. Should I ?
