If you're anywhere close to the Irish Rover on Frankfort Ave., you might want to go there. They definitely have a great kid's menu, too. There are a few places in town that serve this style of fish and chips, and it's ( in my opinion) the most delicious. Puffed up and crispy beer and yeast battered, golden fried, no cornmeal or cracker crumbs, just yummy fried goodness. The Fish house is great, too, but as Robin said, it's Green River style with the cracker crust.

Personally, when I'm trying not to "break my bank", one can pick up a box of these for like 5 bucks or so, throw it on a piece of rye along with some frozen baked fries and 10 people can eat for less than 10 bucks. Plus, there's not the risk of dining out and having diner's remorse on food that's no good and wasting 40 to 50 bucks.

These are also beer battered.

Fish, particularly the cherished "Whitefish" that locals around here crave is not ever going to get any cheaper. Overfishing isn't the only problem...

Check's Cafe in Germantown is my go to place for a Louisville fried fish sandwich. Priced around seven dollars, two generous pieces are usually large enough to make into two sandwiches (just ask for extra bread). While it technically is a bar, it has more of a neighborhood family feel to it.

Irish Rover gets my vote too. Consistently excellent.

I prefer my frozen fish with tater tots. Sprinkle the tots with some seasoned salt as soon as the come out, yummy.

I had a friend that worked the MOby Dick in Clarksville when they first opened, late '70's. They hand cut and breaded their fish and it was always good. She would bring me the end of the day fish and we'd fry it up or make stew. The Mellwood unit used to be good, prices up though.

If this was February or later, you could go to the the Saturday fish fry at the Mason's Suburban Lodge. It's green river style. Be sure to try the chopped onions!

The area's Mody Dicks Restaurants seem to vary greatly. I can recommend the Dixie Hwy at Johnsontown Rd. store. It's always good. Except for a thankfully brief experiment with some kind of no transfat oil. I like the one near UofL also, at Winkler and Third.

And Mike Linnigs is excellent. I don't enjoy their indoor dinning room though, so it's either carryout or eat under the trees for me.

Can't speak for The Rover, definitely need to give it a try. But beer battered is a completely different style than the cracker or cornmeal crusted. The former requires only malt vinegar, the later tartar sauce or chopped onions and ketchup on rye bread. Sorry, this is how it must be done. I'm the definitive authority on this.

it sounds like a lot of folks like the beer battered fish.... we actually prefer the cornmeal coating. not as thick and you can actually taste the fish........ the other types just have too much room for soaking up oil and getting yucky. but that is just our preference.

The Rover Too in LaGrange and The Fish House are our one & two. The added bonus for both is the owners name isn't Gorton.

The only reason ya'll are naming these other joints is because you haven't had the Perch Sandwich at The New Direction on Chamberlain Lane....Home of the BEST Fish Sammich in town.

Give it a try Becky, it's right down the Gene Snyder from the Summit, etc,

No, it's the old Blue Lagoon. Just repurposed by the same owners.
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.
