What is wrong with the school system? Q: Why can't Johnny read? Q: Why can't Sally divide? ANSWER: The administrators are stupid. I was stunned when I heard the announcement of schools getting out early due to the SNOW. What Snow? I am no meteorologist, but I can look at Weather Underground or read the weather releases from the NWS and figure out there was NOT going to be any trouble on the roads this afternoon. Then late this afternoon I heard some one from @JCPSKY say they needed to be "safe and aggressive" about getting the kids home. Excuse Me! Hey you do know if there were neighborhood schools they could walk home in the snow, right? Like we used to do. Too Much Fun! The first step in correcting this is 'firing' all the board members, beginning with the next election. In three cycles we can put enough people on the board who have common sense and get rid of the administrators who are more concerned with protecting their jobs than with educating our kids. What's next, calling off school because it is going to be too hot when they children are going home?

STEPS DOWN OFF RANT BOX.

They're afraid of a bus slipping on an icy road, having kids injured, and subsequently being sued. I agree with everything else you said, though. When I lived in Michigan as a child (not all that long ago) we went to school in 3 feet of snow. We WALKED to the bus stop with snow up to our armpits (uphill, both ways, barefoot, etc) and not once was school ever canceled. We had a ball at recess, though. Remember recess?

My thoughts exactly. Busing seems to be the root of a good chunk of the trouble our schools have. If you can't see that it creates far more problems than it solves...then...well...you must be in the employ of the Catholic school system. 8)

Don't get me started. If this stupid bussing issue isn't fixed by the time my son is old enough, then
we are either going to bankrupt ourselves sending him to Catholic school, or move out of Jefferson county. I refuse to send my little boy on a 30 minute to an hour bus ride ONE way. I understand where the administrators are coming from, on one hand, but it does seem like the last few years, JCPS has closed school an awful lot, just at the hint of snow.

I remember that, It was so hard to fit halloween costumes under or over snowmobile suits. I also remember that same year an excessive amount of snow the week of Thanksgiving and the week of Christmas.

My recollection as well Brad...

We had to have a guy with a Bobcat come in and dig out a bus stop for the little ones so they wouldn't have to stand in the street to wait for the bus.

Eh, at least they didn't close today. It's cold as all get out, but the streets are perfectly clear. I had trouble getting my doors open, but I guess that doesn't really happen on a bus.

I checked the JCPS facebook page just to see whether they were cancelling. People were complaining about the early dismissal yesterday, but then they were complaining about not being out today, lol. Damned if you do...

I fail to see how the roads can be wet, there is salt ankle deep citywide.
