Re: Jackson's Seafood..GREAT DEAL!

Speaking of fresh seafood, I was always told that good fresh seafood should not smell fishy. As I approach the seafood department at Whole Foods, I get hit with a very strong fishy smell. Is this OK or was I told incorrectly about the fishy smell a long time ago?

Please comment to help me understand this better.

The last fish I bought at the Fresh Market on Rudy Ln was treated with some kind of chemical and smelled absolutely disgusting. I also happened to purchase some rancid Crab legs at FM last year. They were frozen when I got them at store and when they thawed they were basically rotten. I have given up on purchasing fish in the 'Ville.

Jen, with all respect, it sounds to me as if you ought to give up on purchasing fish at Fresh Market.

Or heaven forbid take it back. I ran the seafood dept at the Shelbyville Rd store till three weeks ago. If you get bad food take it back whether TFM or Krogers or TJ's.

The fresh fish comes in three days a week to TFM, Tues, Thurs, Sat and you can get it around 11ish most days. If you don't see what you want ask, and don't be afraid to ask them to get some out of the back. Smell it, I had lots of customers do that. Never had one hand it back.

Take the back, I did have one customer who had seen Emeril say fish should never smell fishy. True, except for Grouper about 10 minutes after you fillet it out. It's just that species. They did not understand. I asked if they had ever been to Florida and had Grouper and they said no. I told them it would be the same. Was ok, they got Tuna instead.

It's like customers who say, no, I don't buy previously frozen shrimp. Really, you're driving to the ocean to buy it. Oh no, such and such has fresh shrimp, their signs say so. I would just nod and tell them to enjoy.

Of course now you can get that Trader Joe's fish.. oh wait, it's all frozen. Never mind.

I didn't think you need any more answers since everyone else had chimed in. My favorites are probably Seviche, Mitchell's and Selena's (who always has a great fish special) although I've actually had good fish at other restaurants around town. We also cook a good bit of fish at home, we buy it at Highland Fish Market, Fresh Market and Whole Foods!

I get fresh Grade A Ahi flown in to me from Hawaii no more than 48 hours out of the water, unfrozen.

Also think that Jack Fry's, when they have Seabass on the menu, is as good as you will eat anywhere in this country.
