I agree with this sentiment and have abided by it for years. Thank you for supporting our local breweries.

Did I miss something? Four Pegs is a brewery?

Haven't been on the forum in a while as I've had no exciting food news to report. That all changed on Saturday when we went to Four Pegs for a bite and some brews. We had the best fried green tomatoes I've ever had and a roasted red pepper hummus that was very good as well! I hear the burgers are great, and there's a fried chicken and waffle sandwich that I have to try. Anyways, super nice people and a very laid back environment. I highly recommend giving them a shot.

As for the beer prices, I think I paid 4.50/pint for an IPA, can't remember which one...

Hey Adam,
Did you happen to notice if they are carrying any local beers? The word on this place was they were refusing to carry any of the locals. Just wondered if that was still the case.

Well, I've been twice and both times a bit schnackered (sp?) by the time I got there, but the closest thing to a local I recall seeing is Three Floyds, I think lol. I could be wrong but I don't recall seeing a BBC or NABC or anything along those lines. I will say that I talked with the owner as well as several employees on both visits and don;t recall anyone saying that they were anti-local.

I'll be sure to ask them on my next visit because if that is the case I'd like to hear their reasoning.

This was posted a bit earlier in the thread.

I think that restaurants that view the local breweries as competition just don't have enough confidence in their own establishment. If my only desire was to drink the local beer I could get a growler or bottles and drink it at home. It's the location, atmosphere, and service, along with the food and drink that make a place worth spending my time and money in.

I won't alway choose to drink the local beer especially if there is something offered that I haven't tried before or something that I like and don't often get to have. But choosing specifically not to provide locals for me is a deal breaker. There are plenty of places that do great pub food, have exceptional service, and serve both local and national craft beers. Competition for my time and money is fierce right now. It's a good time for beer drinkers! Cheers

I'm pretty sure Franziskaner has been brewing beer for like 500 years or something. Me I just like good beer and I don't care who makes it. Where I live (Frankfurt) the beer is freaking awful cause they don't have good water. So I buy beer from people who are a few hundred miles away. No biggie in my boook.

They posted on their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Four- ... 9301469816) that local beers are coming soon. It's a comment on their Nov. 23 status update. We in the neighborhood are happy to have them. Is there any particular reason for the specuation on their "refusal" to support locals?

Hi Dan, congratulations on living in one of the world's best places to drink beer. I'm wondering if you're AF. My son is currently stationed at Ramstein and he keeps me up to date on the beer he is drinking. He actually prefers the wheat beers to all others right now. He was home twice this year and in preparing for his visits I picked up several beers sourced from Germany. I also picked up a selection of locally sourced counterparts. I was really surprised when he said his favorite was Upland's Wheat (Bloomington).

I think the Peg's beer lineup as listed at the beginning of this post is quite impressive and I was the first to say that when it came out. I'm only critical of places that won't also support the local breweries. Germans are well known for being loyal to their local brands. With nearly every sizeable town having their own brewery and Europe itself being so compressed compared the the US I would think it would be wonderfully easy to find local beers you like.

I find it interesting that the beer you prefer must be sourced from locations "a few hundred miles away." What are you drinking?

I wouldn't say Germany is one of the world's best places to drink beer. The U.S. probably takes that title. There is very little curiosity here about beer from other countries. It's literally impossible to find Belgian beer here. Czech is limited to the two best known brands. It's all very chauvinistic and German beer, while good, is not exactly adventuresome.

Fortunately my new girlfriend commutes to Belgium and back every week so I'm pretty much golden as long as I keep her happy. :-)
But I like my Bavarian wheats (Paulaner, Franziskaner), Northern German Pilseners (Jever, Flensburger, Einbecker), same for Eifel pilseners (Bitburger, yes Bitburger) and Eifel wheat (Krönes) , don't touch Kölsch, like most Alt beers but they don't sell them around here, you have to go to Düsseldorf. Duckstein is good too.

Frankfurt is the world's capital of no good beer. Binding and Hennniger essentially own the restaurant scene and their beers are just awful.

Dan, I'm really surprised in one sense and then not so much so at your response to my statement about Germany being one of the best places to drink beer. On one hand beer is so much a part of that culture that you can buy it in a McDonald's. On the other hand, as you say when you've been doing something the same way for 500 years the hubris must be immense.

I really don't prefer most German beers. I don't outright dislike them they just are not usually of the flavor profile that I prefer. I drank Belgian Chimay and Kriek beer a bit when I live in England but my favorite type of beer has always been bitter ale.

It's great that you currently have a conduit for your beer and that alone is a great motivator for keeping your GF happy (kidding!). Can you also shop in the Class Six at Ramstein and if so do they have a good selection? My son is only 20 and does not really have a beer background yet. We were going to spend X-mas with him in Germany this year but he had to come home unexpectedly and now has no leave. We didn't want to come to Germany and not be able to travel.

Thanks for reporting the German beer situation as you see it. As someone on the ground there your opinion is much more informed than most. Cheers Dan! Be safe

You can get Uerige, a delicious alt, in 11.6 bottles at Sergio's. Not just the doppelstick (made for USA) but the original. They even had it on tap at Eiderdown at one point.
