Thanks for all the replies and suggestions all. i think i confused people with saying she will be wearing a prom-type dress.... and then some thought she is going to the prom. sorry!

she will be wearing a formal gown, the type that is worn to the prom, but the celebration is for a memorable 16th birthday celebration with her father. (but i did enjoy hearing about the "fun" prom dates!)

we have been looking at menus online......... i told her about tableside guacamole (she loved the idea), live jazz in the background (she thought that was so cool)..... as we were looking at menus i clicked on the pictures at Rivue, and they took her breath away.... i think it is the artist in her. she liked the colors and they way it all looked. she was really, really blown away.... her little face looked so cute!

The could always do a progressive dinner.

Tableside Guac at Seviche
Calamari and Steak/s at Varanese
Dessert at Rivue

It would only be about 25 minutes of driving

FWIW, my GF and I had our belated anniversary dinner at the English Grill, and it was wonderful. Service was incredible (and we even got an extra dessert when the one we ordered was delayed). Even in a hotel, it just feels like you're eating in a place full of both luxury and history.

At my prom, we took a limo from my friend's house to eat at an Italian restaurant which has now closed. I really forget the name of the place, but it was pretty upscale to a bunch of high school kids. I remember almost nothing about it aside from the garlic bread and wonderful red sauce. Can anyone help me out on the name?

For live jazz, much of the menu you listed, formal atmosphere, white orchids everywhere, service on bone china, magnificent decor, et al, you must look up Buck's. She will never forget it! It's often forgotten, but it has to be the most romantic room in the city.

Strictly for the food you were mentioning, Eddie Merlot's can deliver, and many are very well dressed.

I'd really check out the menu at Buck's, though. And - if they do not have calamari listed - call and ask if they can do it for the reservation!

OOOOOHHHHHH! I want to guess - and the spelling is likely incorrect -

La Trattoria de Matei? It was on Shelbyville Road when the Gene Snyder was surrounded by grass and horse farms and that's it. They had violinists serenade the table!!!!

Good god no (good thing for all :-)). You must be thinking of someone else and I've been gone for 3 1/2 yrs (slightly pre-dating the half-priced seviche Sundays). In fact, I have to correct myself: I was only there for 2 1/2 yrs, not 3 1/2 (aging memory).

I was about to try to post a link to that because I remebered you helping someone else with the updated menu recently, AM. I have to agree with the above remarks about the elegance of this place. The neighborhood is historic and atmosphere classic. You kinda get knocked out with the aromas of fresh flowers as soon as the door opens, which I find beautiful.

Then it is likely that our paths haven't crossed. Sigh. :(

Aw, Steve - some day! I count on it.

But the truth is that likely we have crossed paths. Small city, sharp people, love of food - you get the drill.

The restaurant on top of the Galt House is cool for the view. I loved it as The Flagship, when I was a kid. I thought the revolving floor was cool! :) The restaurant renovated and renamed itself Rivue a few years ago. I think the main intention was to adjust the notorious interior decorating style of the Galt House's founder. I haven't been up there to see the new look, but the revolving floor is still going 'round, I think.

Jack Fry's is my favorite place for a formal dining experience. There is just something about that place. I feel like I'm stepping back into an old jazz/mafia movie, and the time goes by slower in there.

Buck's in the Mayflower is also a hidden time machine like Jack Fry's. The Mayflower Hotel/apts has a lot of interesting history to it, and the restaurant, Buck's, fits perfectly.
