Alas for those who love H&H- they are all facotry made now, the 81st and B'way shop closed about a week before my last visit. It was sad indeed to see the store empty.

My whole life, I just thought I didn't like bagels. Then, I visited New York when I was 22. A-HA! I had never actually had a bagel till I had one there. I thought the dense, heavy bread bombs that you get around here were bagels, but no sir, they are not.

My mom and I went on a vacation to NYC as a college graduation gift, and I had a NY bagel from the deli by our hotel with a huge schmear of cream cheese for breakfast every day. So yummy.

I happened to get a haircut next door to Baby D's on Saturday - and learned they were doing a soft open for the public on Saturday. Not one to miss out on a chance like that me, my BF and his two kids swung by while we were out Saturday night.

Derek (aka baby D) cooked us up a brisket on a bagel sandwich - it was tender and delicious with just the right amount of melted cheese. They smoke all their own meats in house. Looking forward to trying the pastrami next time as well as an everything bagel with a shmear. We also had some chili which I thought was OK, but I'm not a big chili fan.

Based on the menu looks like they'll have a wide variety of bagels and home mixed cream cheese spreads (artichoke and poblano sticks in my mind).

There are no prices up on the menu yet (and Derek if you are reading I highly recommend you put them somewhere) but when asked was told sandwiches would run $7 - $8.

I believe their intention is to open up this week - as soon as they get the thumbs up from the health inspector.

OK, this place advertises having bagels that neither one of you commented on them in your post! Does this mean they were just so so or were they just overshadowed by the other food?

They were very good to me. I haven't had authentic NY bagels though, so I'm not sure what I would compare them too. They were soft and had good texture, not chewy. I had a sun dried tomato bagel sandwich with some turkey, lettuce, tomato and the pablano and artichoke cream cheese. I will most def be getting lunch here often as I work right down the street.

The sandwich I had was on a bagel and it was a good sandwich.

I didn't speak to the bagel specifically as I think the true test of the quality of a bagel can only be determined by eating a bagel with nothing more than cream cheese. I am hopeful, but reserving judgment. I do know they are getting bagels flown in from NY and then "finishing" them in the store. Although they are not H&H I hold out hope they will resemble the beloved true NY bagel.

Ah, go ahead--I can handle it. Actually I left NYC in 94 as well. To be honest all I can remember about the bagels I used to get there was the enormous amount of cream cheese they used to put on them. (Yum!) I guess we'll have to disagree about the quality of Nancy's but the point I was trying to make was that for me freshness is one the most important qualities of a good bagel. (I also like a certain amount of heftiness, which may be why I like Nancy's. Breadworks, Panera's and Einstein's bagels are all too thin for me.)

I grabbed a bagel from Baby D's on my way to work this morning and it was exactly what I was afraid it would be: a day old bagel. I usually don't like toasting bagels as it ruins the freshness of them but this bagel would have been inedible without it. I do have to say that the dough had a nice tanginess that I have never tasted in a Louisville bagel. But the freezing/toasting process made it too dried out for me. I'll stick with Nancy's.

BTW, now that the Dooley's on Breckinridge has closed, does anyone know if there are any left in town?

The one on Lime Kiln between 42 and 22 is still open.

i tried one of these bagels today also...mine also didn't taste so fresh which is probably due to getting them shipped in frozen. it was pretty good still apart from this...not as dense or small as a Nancy's bagel and they have a really great varity of bagel sandwich options. the cream cheese i had was tasty and the place has a good vibe. i wish them the best, hopefully they will improve on the finishing process of these bagels....

The Heitzman's on Shelbyville Rd at Hurstbourne has Dooley's. It's a Fanchise and they make them I believe and sell them like cotton candy at the state fair.

Appears to be a copy of the iconic Bagel & Deli at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. I looked into bringing a deriviative of it here a couple of years ago. My plan was to bring in Marx kosher style bagels fresh from Cincinnati 2-3 days a week. They are advertising the bagels straight from NYC so not sure how they are pulling that off.

Boy, Marx in Cincy used to have great bagels, especially the raisin (not cinnamon-raisin) and their poppy seed with Jalapeno Cream Cheese. :D I started to go by their when I was in Cincy a couple weeks ago.

I agree with annemarie about H&H Bagels. They're amazing!

Way Back in The Day, after a night on the town in Manhattan, on my way home I would join the long line at H&H Bagels on the Upper West Side -- I want to say around 80th, maybe on West End Ave? -- I think they opened around 5 a.m.

Fresh, hot, divine. :!:

My wife and I tried Baby D's this morning. She had a Kevin Bacon sandwich on a bialy bagel and I had a garlic bagel. She ended up snagging half of my bagel and leaving the rest of her sandwich for me, which was fine. I though both bagels were very fresh.
If I had a complaint about the place, it would be that the dining room is so small that if there are more than two or three people in line it gets a bit uncomfortable.
