I bought our tix yesterday at Kroger to get the discount. Just for 2 adults, and 1 4 yr old it was $20 with the discount. Then it's $8 for parking. I'm not sure exactly how much food we'll be able to afford as it's already $30 before we've set foot in the door! I may have to limit myself to 1 fried monstrosity and a pork sammich!

The best deal on corn dogs is a $1(maybe $2) corn dog stand on the Midway.

I don't think the admission is free for those who enter something, but you are able to buy combo entrance/parking tickets at a steep discount. You have to pay to enter an item, but you don't have to ultimately enter anything. My mom and brother do enter (culinary, flowers, photography), and I benefit from the reduced tickets.

Opening day is our family tradition. Probably been going for 25 years now. None of the food really does anything for me. Lunch today was ribeye sandwich dressed, cole slaw, and an unsweet tea.

My mom purchased a lemon shake-up later in the day. They come in a 32 ounce souvenir cup for 5 bucks. Problem is, the cups have not been rinsed. The whole thing tasted like "fresh" plastic. My mom took it back right away and was refunded her money. I'd stay away from those. Get the smaller size in the paper, disposable cup.

Let's see........where to begin..........
OH!!! I got chosen as a judge for the Cast Iron Chef competetion! Dean Corbett was MCing. It was GREAT to see him out and about! The two contestants were Pete (?) from a catering company and Hollis from Varnease. YUMMMMM! Strip steak, green beans, and garlic were their items. Hollis did a mushroom dusted steak, green beans with garlic, and a wild rice bread pudding. VERY tasty!!! The other guy did a teriaki steak (he made the sauce) with green beans and a ranch wild rice. I chose Hollis, as did the other two judges.

Later.....had a pork sandwich.....oh!!! Had the maple bacon sundae. It was GOOD! Lots of real bacon and REAL (I made the guy show me the bottle) maple syrup over soft serve butter pecan ice cream. My friend had the deep fried Derby pie, which she liked. Also had a footlong corndog......and more than a few beers.

GREAT time!!!!

That's right. I wasn't remembering correctly. :? I just looked in my Rule book from last year, and it was $22 for 11 tickets, and $8 to enter something(in my case, culinary). The years(2005, '06, '07) I entered, parking was included too, which was awesome.

Getting ready to head down there for a corn dog and to see the rabbits!

I too went to the fair yesterday and ate my way thru...starting with the infamous donut burger...me and hubby shared one ,we decided it would be much better made with pork sausage and served for breakfast and for 7 bucks for 2 Krispy kreme donuts and a single burger patty they were not selling many when we were there, next stop was rear of the south wing for pork burgers and sides...pork burgers are our regular fair food but the potato salad and beans were especially good this year for some reason ...nearly 4 hours of walking later and last stop was the KY proud stand outside the west wing for roasted corn and Rooiboos Red tea...then home to digest

That's just one notch away from free, especially considering the regular admission + parking amount.

Submissions seemed down this year in some categories (antiques, flowers), but not in culinary. Packed display cases, as usual.

Went yesterday - other than the fresh roasted corn I didn't find anything I cared for. The fried Deby Pie was too bready once you add a coating to the pie crust - it was a bit oily too. My son liked the bacon sundae but I didn't get any of that. I'm sure there are some hidden gems out there - I'm just not willing to dig through it all to find them.

Have to put in a plug for the butt on a stick! My favorite thing there, and it's not even too bad for you . . . simple pork steak grilled, with teriyaki glaze or bbq sauce, then skewered for easy eating.

A fried Derby Pie was too oily? Who'd have thunk it??
Did they post the fat content on it? ( pretty sure they wouldn't) I'm guessing it's like 80 % fat....

Andy,

Yum! Is that in the Pork Producers area, or a truck?

Thanks,

They are a separate vendor not part of the pork producers. They are located in a tent between the entrance to freedom hall and the Mike Linning's tent.

All I'm interested in is corn on the cob, a corn dog, and a dole whip. The rest of that fried crap scares me. >.<

I think the best thing at the fair is the roasted corn also we ate ours with no salt or butter this time and I think it was even better...it is also a great value by fair standards when you get it at the farm stand by the west wing 3 ears for 6 dollars.
