I want to 2nd Anderson's "Dish" recommendation and I don't have any ownership, etc. in the restaurant. It really is a treat!

Robin Garr wrote:While it's true that both the real NYC delis like Second Avenue (now gone, I hear) and neighborhood places like Sarge's make awesome Reubens, and even the "tourist delis" like Carnegie make fine, pricey models, one important fact of Reuben anthropology needs to be considered:

The Reuben originated in German bars in the Omaha Stockyards neighborhood, not Jewish delis in New York! What's more, a true Jewish deli could never serve an authentic Reuben, because cheese on meat is not kosher!

Sheesh ...

It's true a "real" Jewish deli can't serve one, but the "real" Jewish delis most visitors know about are Katz's (who doesn't serve it) and Second Avenue (no longer on Second Avenue, but located at 162 East 33rd Streeet between Lexington and Third Avenue, and as of next Tuesday at 1442 First Avenue (on the corner of 75th Street and 1st Ave).

I agree with Annemarie, that in town Jason's is close to as good as it gets.

BTW, all the "real" New Yorkers I know regularly also eat at Carnegie and Stage (although more often at Carnegie) - sure, they're touristy, but they would go under without locals eating there. Also, don't forget Junior's; while not a traditional "deli" they sure have good cheesecake! And, while I think Sarge's is decent, the best thing going for it is that you can go at 2:30am and get anything on the menu!
