Re: Man Vs. Food Nation Louisville episode airs tonight ...

I gave up on that show a long time ago (really, I don't need to see this guy salivating over a five-pound burger and then eating it) but decided to give this episode a look. It wasn't too bad. It technically was Man vs. Food Nation, which seemed to have a little more focus on travel (as it's on, you know, the Travel Channel) and also left the big Comfy Cow challenge to a local—in this case, a guy nicknamed 'Burrito Joe' because he once ate a 3.5 lb burrito in under four minutes. Overall, it was pretty respectful to Louisville; it seems Adam Richman lived here for a bit (they showed his Old Louisville apartment) and so I'm guessing he had some creative control over the usual regurgitated (if you'd pardon the word) cliches.

Had this show taped and finally got around to watching it last night...overall not bad. There were some very nice snippets of the city skyline, etc, etc. Not sure what to say about the concept of the show, on one hand Adam Richmond (or anyone who consumes food like he does) kinda-sorta grosses me out. On the other hand it's like seeing a train wreck happen...in the sense that you WANT to look away but can't.

Ya'll remember that show on the Food Network (before they started axing all the good shows) called "The Best Of" ?...THAT was a pretty cool concept.

I remember it! I particularly remember co-host Jill Cordes.

Yeah. I really liked that show...Kind of a half travel and half food show done in a very friendly format. I miss that kinda stuff on the Food Network. Anymore 90% of what they show is just crap.

The only real train wreck I noticed on this episode was Lynn Winter.

I totally agree with Lynn being a train wreck!! (insert disgruntled ex-employee emoticon here) I was aghast when they were filming this thing and vowed not to watch it. It was Monday, following Derby and Mothers day weekend. I only did 52 hours in 3 days and was looking to my monday off, NOOOO, she brought everybody in to share in her glory. They even rented chef coats for the staff. I was wearing my hand made coat w/ antique buttons, and black. 8) They wanted me to change into a rented white one. It was a joke!!! All the mgmt staff was hanging out watching the "shoot", and the hourlys were all taking turns out back smoking. What a waste of time and money!! But there was a chance you might be on TV!!! :| I've been on TV and was not the least bit concerned, I just wanted my normal day off. I had kicked major butt that weekend and even made double batches of milk-based sauces and gravies, (only 6 gals) my "lesser experienced" KM told me he had tried to do and failed. WUSSY!! Thanks for nuthin'. I actually liked what I was doing there and would have continued, but alas, it was not meant to be. Did I mention I was job hunting? LOL

You really know you've made it by two factors: 1) you appear on national TV in a good light - repeatedly in the case of Ms. Winter's establishment & 2) you get trashed by locals for reasons that have no relation whatsoever to the customer experience.

Congrats to you, Lynn! I thought you were great on "Man v. Food Nation" and so did my wife, Diane.

I remember working in a job years ago and the warehouse manager told me how he and his staff had worked 30 days straight for 24 hours. They slept on cots set up in a break room for a few hours at a time on rotating double shifts (16 hours/day) and got the job done. I was a kid in my 20s and asked him why they did it. He said it was to take care of the customer. He didn't say so but by extension it was to take care of the employer. Boy, do I understand the wisdom of this warehouse manager decades later. His point was this was not a regular work drill but when the job demanded the extraordinary they did it, even to 16-hours a day for 30 days. Not a desirable situation but not a year-round one either.

Tim Y put it an LOT of hours over that peak time, if not 480 hours in a month. Still, there's Chik-Fil-A opening around October 11 that might be a possibily for you. I do feel for you as I've experienced great frustration in my former work lives. Based on your post maybe you should consider a change in career path. I mean that sincerely, no sarcasm. If it doesn't feel right to you it probably isn't right for you. Best of luck.

Umm, I've eaten the food before, too, and it's nothing above mediocre.

I have family members who, like Tim, have worked at this place, with not very positive comments. Lynn only shows up for the glory.... Ask Bobby Flay if he'd ever share a camera with her again after his "Throwdown" segment was taped....

But, hey, she's figured something out over there, because lots of people feel like it's a destination. So, more power to her.

I will say this much: The woman is a shrewd self-promoter, that's for sure. LPC turns up in pretty much every travel article about Louisville and on all those travel shows. Similar to Disney World, everyone has to go at least once to experience the bread and circus.

I watched the show because two of my grand kids were in the Comfy Cow segment. One even got to say a few words. Also because it was set in Louisville.

I find the show gross and don't watch it normally.

Lynn Winter is a train wreck in a good way and has been since she opened on Frankfort Ave. She is also funny and personable and obviously a very astute business lady and a great promoter.

I did business with her from when she opened until I retired. She always paid promptly and was always cordial to me. Although I didn't know her well, I believe she has to be admired for her accomplishments.

Tim, I wish your luck in your job search. If you were a restaurant owner and just read your post in a public forum referring to your former boss as a "train wreck", do you think that would help or hurt your chances of getting hired? As someone who has interviewed hundreds of people for a Fortune 100 company, being critical of your former boss or a company is always a really big red flag.

This.

It's easy to trash talk a former employer, but much more difficult (and classy) to only say nice things...even if you have to reach a bit.

Tim, I thought you left because you asked for two weeks' vacation after working there four months and were refused. Hard to come by in ANY business these days.

Best wishes with the restaurant. I'm sure you'll keep us posted.

Jason, just curious, how do you know this, did Bobby tell you this?

Ask Bobby Flay if he'd ever share a camera with her again after his "Throwdown" segment was taped....
