How about an urbane, sophisticated-yet-down-to-earth mature gentleman who writes like a good neighbor?

Oh jeez, the communal tables.

My wife and I were out at a pizza place in another town while on vacation. We had a reservation for an early dinner and the place is, as expected, about half full. Plenty of open two and four tops around. We get seated at the end of a super huge long communal table, probably 30 seats on each side. We're a little confused, but I'm more put off than my wife is, and she's the type unless something is really really wrong, she doesn't want me to say anything. Besides there was plenty of room in the table, and surely they'll allow some buffer space between parties right?

Nope. Next two parties of two get seated directly across from us, and directly next to us. There were easily another 40 or 50 seats along the table they could have been given. To top it off, when the diners across from us get their entrees, the lady reaches all the way across the table to grab our parmesan and red pepper shakers that were sitting about one inch from my plate. Make no mistake, this was WELL inside our space, and not in any sort of communal 'middle of the table' area.

That is my first and last experience with communal tables at anything but the most casual of local hangouts. If there's another option, I'm asking for it. If there isn't another option, I'll likely find someplace else to eat...

Not restaurant trend per se, but manic, jack-ass chefs and crazy kitchens as shown on food network are tired beyond belief.

I thought the South Park episode likening food preparation to pornography captured it perfectly when Stan's father took over the school cafeteria and started a Chef war while the kids just wanted a piece of Pizza. Creme Fraiche!!!!!

Bottom line: As long as something is good, no one really needs a list of ingredients as well as how food is prepared. Reason I go to a restaurant is to get something good to eat without thinking about it, not receive a dissertation about how what the kitchen is doing behind the scenes.

p.s. Need to watch that SP episode as it also was the "shake weight" episode
