If I (say) go to a restaurant and have a Jones for a Hot Brown, I most likely want a classic Hot Brown, not someone's advant garde interpretation of a Hot Brown.

Widmer "Hefeweizen".

Although it is even worse than your example, its a dumbing down instead of an avant garde interpretation. At least with the latter, something good might come of it, even if the name is a lie.

Gotta lean towards the "there is no new food", line of thinking. A "recipe" is a guideline, unless baking. Scaled measurements, and technique are pivotal. Had a baker, "this one time at band camp" tried to make "choux Arturo". I showed him how it was done for the first batch of 100 or so, (needed 6) and left him on his own. He skipped the step of boiling water and butter before adding flour. :x Bread, the "mother sauces", we did not invent this stuff, :!: but it is ours to play with. Some things cannot be F'ed with. Too much "Foo Foo", can ruin a classic.

In TOTAL agreement with the Widmer cross-reference. *blurgle* Horrible hefeweisen.

So I was posting in the resurrected Lynn's thread and someone mentioned the Bobby Flay throw down that she won. MY MOTHER wrote the recipe for the bourbon ball french toast that Lynn won the challenge with. Mom left her desk job to pursue her cooking passion and Lynn's Paradise was her end-all-be-all place of destination... she beat down Lynn's door to get hired as a prep cook (she was denied, denied, then hired). But momma had talent and got to write many specials. Yrs later, momma knew about the throw down and was pleased. So on a random Saturday several years ago, momma was listening to "What Do You Know" on NPR while Lynn was interviewed and propped for her Throw Down triumph, and while my momma paused and paid close attention, she heard zero credit to her brain child. Sure, bourbon ball french toast is something a lot of chefs are probably doing now, but 15 yrs ago, no so much and definitely not so well. My momma's RECIPE for the *three cheers for KY* BOURBON BALL FRENCH TOAST was the quiet winner against Bobby Flay. Creative license declares such.

***Momma's name is Kathy Tribble, in case anyone wants to correct accreditation in future Bourbon Ball french toast accolades.

That dish is the BOMB as far as I'm concerned! Kudos to your mother and her mad skills. BTW, my son-in-law (while in town from London England) ate at Lynn's, had the Bourbon Ball French Toast and loved it! I'll be sending him a link to this thread so he'll know who to properly thank.

Is your Son In Law English, or just living over there? If he is English, you should have brought him over to meet me, I always like meeting fellow Brits.

He is Welsh (translation: Extra special English!) and yes I should have. We'll put that on the board for their next visit!
