I do the workouts of the day about 5 or 6 days a week. Awesome.

I run 40-50 miles a week. And I'm still chubby. But I drink like a fish. ;)

Since being diagnosed Type 1 diabetic in November, I've made three major changes to my eating habits:

1. Way less meat, and lean meat when I eat it. A portion of meat should be the size of a woman's hand, not the portion sizes served at most restaurants.

2. Control carb intake. It's so easy to screw this up (put that third dinner roll back in the bowl!). I aim for about 250 carbs on the day with my largest intake (60-70 carbs) at lunch. I eat more when I am active (cycling), but that burns right away.

3. Less alcohol. Only the lucky can really lose weight when consuming a healthy amount of alcohol.

I've always been small, but I needed to lose some weight when I was diagnosed. Lost about 9% of my total weight, and that would be greater if I exercised more and didn't hit the PB when in need of some protein. That's my one vice. Too much PB! Guess it's better than Hardees or chocolate cake!

For a guy like me in his 50s it takes:
1) Five to six hours of aerobics a week, more in nice weather when it's hard to pass up more power walking
2) Two slow motion weight routines a week - it's harder than fast ones & less chance of joint damage. Very necessary to maintain muscle mass similar to my younger days as after 40 the gradual loss only accelerates with age if you don't stay on top of it. And we all know the less muscle the fewer calories that get burned.
3) At home, eating small portions of mostly vegetarian foods, rarely anything that had a central nervous system
4) Beverage control: Last sugar soft drink was maybe 30 years ago, no sweet tea, etc. & confine almost all beer consumption to weekends.
5) Eating out, leaving a fair bit of food on the plate most of the time. Servers sometimes think something is wrong with the food. If restaurants served the same portions I got in 1975 I'd usually finish it. It's a meal, not a dare.

Jeremy - I passed you in the park today and I almost stopped and took a picture to post here... now wishing I did - glad I had sunglasses on! but what can you do right? we all need a little more sun this time of year. If no one knows this about Jeremy - the man competes in some crazy long distance events - I would imagine that 40-50miles a week is a low estimate for right now...will be increasing in about three weeks right?

I will post what works for me, and its a modified version of Fit for Life. I am 37, and following it, I managed to lose 60 pounds (25% of my weight over 6 months), and keep it off for two years running with minimal exercise and some modification to my food intake.

1) Fresh squeezed fruit juice and fresh fruit, as much as I want before noon.
2) I try not to mix proteins and starches, making small adjustments to my meals.
3) I try to eat high moisture foods.
4) I try not to eat after 8pm.
5) I follow 2-4 above about 75% of the time.

I have given out over 40 copies of this book, and nearly everyone who follows it loosely has managed to lose weight. Give it a read, for me and my family, it was 137 pages that changed our lives forever.

Now the disclaimers:

- I don't eat red meat nearly as often as I used to and oddly I don't miss it.
- I am not a milk drinker (don't get me started on this one), but I love cheese.
- There are those that will say its sounds too good to be true, but it really does work because most of the foods we eat today are more processed (caloric dense vs. nutrient dense) and harder for our bodies to digest.

This one is huge. I consume maybe 3 cans of soda/month. I use raw sugar in coffee/hot tea, and that's about the extent of my sugar intake beyond what it found naturally in fruits and vegetables (and the occasional desert, of course).

After years of this, I don't even think to order soda anymore. Other than alcohol, my beverage intake is primarily water, coffee, and hot tea.

Totally missed you! Well, in 3 weeks I was stupid enough to sign up for back to back marathons, so I supposed you could say that. I'd like to stay in the middle 50s through the summer and up it a bit for fall marathon season.

This is a great topic. I've tried most of the things mentioned here so far. I've found though, that one of the best is "appetizer instead of entrée," which has been mentioned a few times. In fact, I find that at some of my favorite Louisville spots (Seviche, Proof, 732 Social, Lilly's) that I like the 1st courses more, anyway. That's where some of the most interesting flavors are lurking.

A questions for owners: since 1st courses are usually much cheaper than entrées, do you get irritated with us when we order 1st courses for dinner? I promise, I'm not trying to save money, just calories (also, I usually make up for the $ in the bar tab!)

Metabolife, walking 20-25 miles a week, and two hours of pilates.

Portion control.

Eat at home, stay alive!
I also run, not jog, 80 miles per week, swim another 15-20 miles up river against the current in the Ohio. Then I cool down by walking another 22 km or so each hour to the East Side so I can be among the very coolest people. That, plus I tell a bunch of lies on the internet.
