If you've never made it out to Shack in the Back you need to try it. If you have, I don't remember seeing it on here. And ask Mike or Barb to show you the "shack" in the back - you'll drool all over yourself, being the bbq miester you are!!!

I have been buggin Steve for some time to get out there. I know he recently tried for lunch but they were closed. I also am looking forward to our "amateur experts" take/review on the Q over there.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

FYI: Shack in the Back has $10 and $25 gift certificates available at 80% off @ restaurant.com as long as one enters the promo "TASTY."

Hey now...I'm not the only "amateur expert" in these parts. I think there are probably quite a few people that can tell good "Q" from bad.

Yep, Shack in the Back is (what my grandaddy used to call) a "fer piece" from our home in Garage Logic. But I made the trip yesterday only to discover they were closed. My bad...sez right on their website in black and white "closed Monday"..shoulda checked the website before mounting my steed.. Anyway, when I stopped by they were prepping for some kind of a fund raiser that they were doing last night...and if smell is any indication, the place is the real deal. Can't wait to give 'em another try.

Thanks for the "heads up" on the discount coupons Gayle.

Well...well...lookie here  ...Right in my own back yard. Stopped in at Big R's BBQ in LaGrange to have lunch with Mister Vermillion this afternoon. Not bad "Q" A-tall. I'd had the brisket at Big R's when we first moved to town (not bad) but they abandoned their (original) digs and not having my thumb on the pulse of LaGrange, I'd just assumed they'd closed. Turns out they had just moved down the street a block to the old "Hot Dog Heaven" location.

Anyway...tried a bit of everything today and I'd have to say the Baby Back ribs are right up there with the best of what I've had locally...Kind of a toss up between them and Texicans (I'd have to try 'em side by side before falling off the fence). Pork was nice and smokey but a bit dry, same for the brisket...but the flavor of both was vewy-vewy good. OH...and the sausage. OMG the sausage. Now I WILL say it's right up there with the best I've had ANYWHERE. The sides were most excellent. I had the tater salad, which was very similar to the red potato salad they sell at Costco...not sure if it's the same stuff but it was very good. Mac and Cheese was also most excellent.

I'm definitely doing Big R's again...especially since it's only a couple of miles from Garage Logic.

'Nuther BBQ joint has popped up here in the OC...Colorado Mikes in the old "Mom's" and/or Son of a Sailor location. The ribs (St. Louie cut spares) were cooked spot on perfect. They were lightly sauced and came across tastin' pretty good. I'd eat the ribs again in a heartbeat...Wouldn't give ya two cents for their Brisket or Pork...The Brisket was more like roast beef with au ju and had a bad after taste (which I'm gonna guess was a combination of commercial beef broth and rendered beef fat). The pork was pulled and then apparently victimized by some form of mechanical separation...I'm sure they make it there but it sure looked more like something out of a carton at the grocery store than actual "pulled" pork. It tasted a little better than it looked but it wasn't "Rock Star" caliber by any stretch of the imagination. Didn't try all the sides but the "Smoked" Pickled Eggs were awesome...The beans sucked. It was more like BBQ sauce with a few beans than it was beans with a little sauce. My take was, no sense going back here when Big R's and Texican's are both within 5 miles of the house.

I was at Shack in the Back today and met the owners, and got the tour. Old school smoking. All wood. No gas powered supplemental heat. I had the pulled pork and potato salad with some awesome pickles. The meat was perfect. I did not get to try the ribs as they are not open on Sunday or Mondays. I will be back to try the ribs. Great spot.

Willie C Note...Yep, I got the same "vibe" when I pulled in and found them closed that afternoon. They were in the process of prepping for a fund raiser that evening, so the smoker was going full bore. Smelled DAMN good. The fact that the Pit Master had only half a set of teeth kicked the place up a full notch and a half in my book...That before I ever had a chance to try their food. I'm back there ASAP.

Here's a lady who thinks she's got it going on. Claims to have the best BBQ'd Baby Backs evvvvver. Personally, the method and the finished product make me spit up a little bit in my mouth. Ya'll check it out...Tell me what you think.

Ehhhhhh....I was showing this video to the Beckster and we were having a good laugh, when I noticed something. The woman in the video has Robin egg blue fingernails. I'm pretty sure...in some hipster kinda way...that this explains a LOT about her knowledge of cooking ribs.

So much for the "Food-volution" 8)

Ummm, that chick was stoned. As for the band-aid covered thumb with the nasty chipped blue nail polish... you have much to learn about hipsters, old fart. Not only was she stoned, she was a touch trashy. I loved the way she commented on her "dirty stove, lol". True hipsters never "lol". Food-volusion not present atall.
