Teamster Local 783 (former Steward), formerly IAFF Local 345, former Louisville EMS Employee Association (Union Rep and Secretary) here. Don't you love how he has managed to put the blame on unions when they bargained in good faith and the state, municipality or who ever AGREED to the contract? When they start the cuts, will the folks that voted them in accept it when they have to lose something? I kinda doubt it......

Contracts bargained in good faith in the private sector collapse all the time - primarily by bankruptcy. The public sector is rapidly falling in line.

Just for the record -I have gone many years without pay raises to get a decent retirement, not the gold plated one I keep hearing I have as a public employee. I will have my health insurance payments quadruple at least when I retire because I have to use the plan KRS chooses. The KY legislature has raided both the KRS and CERS plans to balance the budget in the past and combined with the economy tanking, the future benefits have dropped for the last 8 years. Because I was in hazardous duty, my contributions are higher, between that, no pay raises and raising 3 kids, not a pile of savings here. I have given up sick time, vacation time, holidays in negotiations. I guess I should have worked in Wisconsin. In EMS we are constantly threatened with privatization - you will love private EMS, good luck getting an ambulance if you do not have insurance and the base rate would at least double from the current rate.

I am not necessarily a union fan, but in government one thing they do is protect the citizens from the massive change everytime you get a new boss. Imagine if your whole PD, FD, EMS, and just the clerks in the tax office changed at the whim of the political machine? Want to be the person trying to get taken care of in this learning curve?
