It is hard to give a single answer to this question but here are my top three:

1. More high paying technical and manufacturing jobs. We have many people under employed or unemployed and many of our major sources of jobs are office, corporate headquarters, call centers, etc. which can move or go away at the drop of a hat.

2. A greatly improved transportation system including subways, trolley/light rail and commuter rail. Such systems should not be placed only for visitors like what has been proposed but also should be set up to allow local people to use them to and from work.

3. An improved education system from kindergarten through graduate school. The systems we presently have a respectable but hardly world class.

Overall Louisville is in a good position for most things but needs improvements to continue to grow and become a world recognized city for something other than the Derby!

Mark,
Thanks for playing but the rules clearly limit each contestant to one entry.

The best, right, and only answer is....

...an NBA team.

Direct airline flights to the rest of the world. I'm sick of seeing the inside of the Atlanta, St. Louis, Phoenix airports.

More people willing to break "the rules" to make the city better...

1) Neighborhood schools for those who wish to have them. "Dumb but diverse" isn't my idea of an educational goal.

2) I agree with better transportation. We have some of the oddest bus routes in some areas and no routes at all in others. Light rail would be a dream come true. I'd be willing to pay more in taxes to see that come to fruition.

3) This one is already in process--rattling the HUMANS' cages at Metro Animal Services. Hey, I'm an animal lover, and how we treat lesser creatures is indicative of our humanity. I didn't vote for Mayor Fischer, but after seeing his administration clean house at MAS, I'm pleased with his performance thus far.

4) On a superficial note, how about another cable provider? I'm so sick of the Insight monopoly and the never-ending stream of postcards informing me my bill will only go up $5 a month because I'm a preferred customer. Yeah right.

I'll second that, it is supposed to be an International Airport!! Fed up with having to change in Chicago, Detroit, or on one strange occasion Dallas!!!!! when I was flying to London.

There's also one commercial flight to Canada or Mexico, that's how they are able to use that designation. I'm serious.

Yep, it would be nice...but speaking as someone with 25+ years in the aviation industy, I can tell ya it ain't never-ever gonna happen. Ever.

Fact is, we'll be lucky to keep what we've got.

I'm not sure if it was ever in the realm of possibility but...

My fifty-something father's argument is that this city missed it's chance to really grow and matter by not ever attracting an airline hub. You can do direct flights to some city and having Southwest helps, but the father figure argues Louisville would "matter more" if some airline called Louisville home.

I agree with Steve (did I just say that?), in believing that airplane has already sailed.

Matthew. It's OK...you can agree with me. Everyone does at some point (or should)

Fact is, I don't know that L'ville has ever been positioned to attract an airline "Hub"...and had they been I'm sure they would have found it to be a mixed blessing...Just ask people in Minneapolis, Cincinnati, St. Louis or Kansas City. Those cities are just a few of those who have been bent over backwoods  and had an airline boot inserted into their collective asses at one time or other. The only advantage to having an airline hub in ones city is the convenience of being able to jump on a plane and fly to whatever hinterland city you desire without the inconvenience of changing planes. I won't go into all the kinky ways airlines can hose their "host" cities...if you want to explore just the tip of the iceberg, check out this link:

P.S. Matthew, you should learn to listen more to your father. We "50-somethings" are at that neat little age where we're old enough to have all the answers but young enough not to have forgotten what they are

There have been some flights to Toronto, Mike, but as I understand it, the real reason for the "International" designation is that there's a US Customs office here, and the primary reason for that is ... UPS.
