Sure, Bill, and I hope my response didn't have a tone implying that you were a grump. It certainly wasn't so intended, and my post was just a general ramble.

May I add that there is nothing wrong with being a grump? Some of my favorite people are grumps. When they're nice to you, you really feel special.

Question as to relevance: We all (Metro residents) do pay school taxes, and we live in the community where the JCPS students will grow up and become contributing tax payers. Or not. :? In other words, we all have a stake.

Ignoring the social implications of early dismissal for a moment...

Urban Legend has it that the Inuit (Eskimos if you will) have over 100 words for "Snow". In the upper midwest, where I've spent the majority of my life, we also have several words for snow...Many of them not repeated in "polite" company. Having just returned from outside, I have made the wonderful discovery that -this- particular snow is what we Minnesotans call "Snow Man Snow". In other words, the ambient air temputure and the moisture content of the snow have conspired to create the perfect medium for creating Frosty works of art. So. My point is...if these little curtain crawlers aren't going to be in school, it is incumbent upon all parents to get the little truants out from in front of the video games and out in the damn yard making stuff that we can all look at and admire with great appreciation. Now git 'r done. :D

Careful there Robin....carrrrrrreful. You almost used the words/expression "stake holder"...Just one of the (several) phrases we frown on out here in Gumption County. As a gentle warning, use of such expressions often result in the user being placed on "the list"...and we all know what can happen then. 8)

As a public service to the uninitiated, we also frown on (among others) the words:

Closure
Nurturer
Validate
Bonding
Consensus
Dialog
Empower
Enabler
Level the playing field

and of course (my favorite)

French Culture.

It's an unfortunate fact that over 60% of students that attend JCPS schools are on a free/reduced lunch program. Trust me. I know for a fact these decisions are not made lightly. I just got back from feeding all of the elementary principals. Many were glad that their students were going to get a meal today. it's true that for many it will be their only meal.
Contingency plans for today were made at the beginning of the week when the weather forecast was made. Snow days are definitely not days off for us central office staff.
It takes a lot of coordination to plan ahead of these weather related closings.

Day like this are why my move to MN cannot occur soon enough.
I am the original Mike G, never mind the impostor.

I am kind of a big deal.

Dude,

It's gonna be 22 BELOW zero in The Cities tonight (without factoring in a wind chill which will take it down to ohhhhhh about 45 below). They've got 2 feet of snow on the ground and another 3 or 4 inches on the way. Minny is one of the greatest places on earth to live............6 months out of the year...but (and trust me on this) January is NOT one of those months.

Question as to relevance

Personal curiosity.

Or not. :? In other words, we all have a stake.

I'm interested in seeing varying answers with regards to people that have children and not; whether their opinions and judgments lay on the same track.

NOT.

Oh. You don't have a child , so your opinion doesn't weigh as much in this conversation.

I have reactions to most of the words on this list, but I'll save that post for another day and simply say the world would be a better place (there's a phrase I could do without!) if no one ever used the word "empower" again. I can't think of a single way it could be used where it does not sound naive, or condescending, or pejorative, or idiotic, etc. Given that politicians and upper administrators love that word, I just make peace with it by seeing it as "empty rhetoric."

To open a can of worms, I'd argue that while people should have an opinion on the issue of neighborhood schools, I think the most valuable arguments come from those people with children being affected by the system. I might know "about" the issue, but I haven't experienced it.

Sorry if I am moving off topic.
