These are my most missed places from childhood. Coming to Louisville was a rare treat (only 2-3 times year up until I was a teenager) even though we were only in Nelson County and not 300 miles away.
York Steakhouse--I'm vague on where this was.
The Walgreens restaurant inside Bashford Manor--we rarely went there, so it was yet another treat.
Burger Chef--In the Louisville tradition, it is now a Walgreens at the corner of Bardstown and Watterson Trail. Up until I was old enough to veto dining selections, this was the go-to place for my parents.
White Castle on Eastern Parkway--I was hospitalized at St Joe's once and I was over the moon when my Dad brought in contraband burgers. I considered it sacrilege when they tore that WC down.
Eddie's Fish House--My Dad was an officer at an American Legion post which had fish fries. Eddie's was where they bought the fish, and Dad was in charge of picking it up. We always ate there when picking up fish.
Fanelli's Ice Cream--I remember going to movies with a church youth group and we would stop there on the way home. Pure bliss.
As I recall, whenever I was in a school group on a field trip to Louisville, all of my fellow compadres insisted on eating at McDonald's (there wasn't a McD's in Bardstown at the time) or Burger Queen in Fern Creek. I wasn't keen on either as I wanted something "more interesting." I always wounded up pouting because McD's didn't interest me. Some things never change.
