I think many people show up not in the know and expect to sample or being able to purchase BBQ from the competitors, and then are disappointed because they can't. KCBS rules strictly forbid this as health regulations vary greatly from state to state. The proximity of the Broadway Derby cruising crowd and a major homeless shelter full of residents, both looking for handouts, may only exasperate the crowd and competitors even more.
Dan, my comment is not in "argument" with you as much as it is growing from the point about samples and health regulations. Just wanted to try to make that clear, to try not to look like a prick.
There is some irony in the idea of "throwing out" perfectly good meat (or what at one time was perfectly good meat) at a homeless shelter. I completely understand the health regulations issue (sanitation of work space, holding temps, raw meat cross-contamination, etc.). These events just seem wasteful in that, from what I've seen on TV (can it be trusted?) teams cook much more than the judged amount to have choices of what to present to the judges. While that seems bothersome (to me) in general, I don't tend to get all that worked up about it. Having the event at a homeless shelter just seems to take the whole "wasteful" element to an ironic level.
I kind of hope a bunch of the residents do ask for handouts. That's a bunch of meat that's going to end up where? In the dumpster?
