Dan Thomas wrote:One other small thing to consider, there is a lot of misconception when it comes to BBQ competition.
I think many people show up not in the know and expect to sample or being able to purchase BBQ from the competitors, and then are disappointed because they can't. KCBS rules strictly forbid this as health regulations vary greatly from state to state. The proximity of the Broadway Derby cruising crowd and a major homeless shelter full of residents, both looking for handouts, may only exasperate the crowd and competitors even more.

Dan, my comment is not in "argument" with you as much as it is growing from the point about samples and health regulations. Just wanted to try to make that clear, to try not to look like a prick.

There is some irony in the idea of "throwing out" perfectly good meat (or what at one time was perfectly good meat) at a homeless shelter. I completely understand the health regulations issue (sanitation of work space, holding temps, raw meat cross-contamination, etc.). These events just seem wasteful in that, from what I've seen on TV (can it be trusted?) teams cook much more than the judged amount to have choices of what to present to the judges. While that seems bothersome (to me) in general, I don't tend to get all that worked up about it. Having the event at a homeless shelter just seems to take the whole "wasteful" element to an ironic level.

I kind of hope a bunch of the residents do ask for handouts. That's a bunch of meat that's going to end up where? In the dumpster?

Alrighty then...I guess The Rolling Bones (sponsored by members of Louisville Hotbytes) will be cooking the Inaugural "Run for the Ribs". Geez, guys, I'm touched...and I'll do everything in my power to cook BBQ that hogs would be proud to die for.

I'll take ya'll up on your offers to contribute to the entry fee with the caveat that IF by some strange magic we do manage to win anything, I'll donate it all back to Wayside. How's that sound ?

Matt,

Good points...Maybe this will make ya feel a little better. (From the Run for the Ribs Website)

We request that all leftover meat be donated to the Wayside Christian Mission (the location of the event) for distribution to the homeless. If you are interested in cooking extra meat as well for donation, please contact us so we can provide the meat.

Steve, thanks for pointing that out to me. I don't know the health code well enough to see how this works within the code and samples do not, but I'm not really interested in splitting hairs. Glad to see there has been some planning given to the concerns I mentioned. Good luck to the Rolling Bones. I think it's exciting that LHB is sponsoring you guys.

Actually....That "sponsored by" in my previous note was a little bit tongue in cheek. While I will accept the generous offerings of a few forum members (again repeating the caveat that any "proceeds" go back to Wayside) I don't expect Robin would want to put the reputation of his website at risk by actually sponsoring a meat burning-cheap beer swilling neerdowell. :P

That seems highly unlikely, as we will be looking for that first round playoff bye. If by some strange twist of fate the Bungles can beat the Ravens. :?
I'm looking forward to Sunday as the last game we watched there, there seemed to be almost as many, if not more Steeler fans at place that bills itself as a Brown's establishment. :P :P

Talking BBQ with Steve is always a pleasure. It might be the perfect opportunity to try out the new method you were discussing with me at Gayle's. :D

Ooooops...just realized that in addition to this thing going down on Derby weekend, it is also Mother's Day weekend. Given that "honor thy father and mother" is #5 with a bullet in the list of 10 Commandments. I'm pretty sure spending the weekend engaged in glutinousness behavior and assorted debauchery would not be honoring said family members and thus be a sure ticket to hell. Thank you to all who pledged their moral and financial support but given this new discovery I don't believe it would be in our best interest to attend said contest.

It is so sad to hear that you won't be participatin in this Mega-BBQ competition, but I certainly understand. I will try to find another great use for the money that I would have spent supporting you. :)

The Economist's year-end double issue had an article about barbecue:

http://www.economist.com/node/17722664

Blue Smoke, a Manhattan restaurant mixing and matching various traditions, is mentioned:

And indeed Mr Meyer’s restaurant, rather than being steeped in a single tradition, is an homage to barbecue’s catholicity. Yet befitting its Manhattan location, it has a drinks menu that extends beyond RC Cola and Bud Light. “The worst thing we could have done”, says Mr Meyer, “is to pretend that we were a ‘barbecue joint’ rather than a New York restaurant.”

See, that's what I've always said. Why waste crapola beer on good food?

Thanks Gayle. Yeah in addition to it being Mother's Day weekend, that Saturday is also my mom's birthday. Probably wouldn't be a good thing if I blew that off to cook a BBQ contest :? Oh well, we'll be cooking another "home" contest in Jeffersonville in June...a bit more affordable and maybe a bit less crazy than trying to do this thing on Derby weekend.
