Me too! Love Alice Cooper! After that gotta have "pork butt on a stick" YUM! I entered a cake in the "Favorite Cake" category, keep yer fingers crossed. Also doing a few of the "Special" cooking competitions - Friday night's is a lot of fun. It's sponsored by Evan Williams Bourbon and they have door prizes, music, etc while the judging is going on. Judging starts at 6pm in the south wing at the Gourmet Garden stage. There's a contest at the same time most every night, different sponsors.

I'm going Saturday. I'm looking forward to seeing how far along the North Wing (formerly East Wing) renovation is going. Does anyone know if it's near completion yet?

I also like looking at the culinary exhibits and certain areas in the commercial space, as that's where a lot of the counties and organizations in Kentucky have booths set up. The state historical society had a nice setup last year.

The fair food in general doesn't do a lot for me, though. However, it does give me a good excuse to eat some delicious Kentucky barbecue.

Heather,

Please tell your Dad we've been fans for years: ever since they played at Chance School when my now teenaged daughter was in school there. ( And we also really enjoyed them in "As you like it".) We will definitely check to see when they are playing as we figure out our State Fair plans- now I want to introduce my 3 year old son to their music.

Deb - thanks SO much for the kind words! I will definitely pass them along. And I bet your son will LOVE it - kids love jug band music! :D

If you like, shoot me a private message with your email address and I can add you to their local email list. We don't send out tons of email but it will keep you notified as to when they are playing around town.

Thanks again!

I have fond memories of the side shows too. What collection of souls. I do not think it is the same anymore.

Fudge?

by TanyaD » Wed Aug 15, 2007 9:07 am

Does anyone recall the name of the really, really good place that sells fudge? It was kinda in the middle of the vendors' section, at the end of a row. I know there were a couple of places selling fudge, but this one was clearly the best--my friend is going Friday and I wanted to tell her about it, but I can't think of the dang name!

Tanya -- You're probably thinking of Morgan's Fudge (the guys who flip the liquid fudge high in the air and somehow never spill a drop). Fabulous stuff -- and I normally don't crave fudge. They're in the South Wing, booths SW462 & 472. I recommend the peanut butter...

best...aa.

That's great news because my friend specifically said she was looking for peanut butter fudge!

I have an entry in the Evan Williams Bourbon contest as well! It's my very first cooking contest (gulp!) I don't expect to win, but I think it will be fun, and they seem to want to create a festive atmosphere in general. Best of luck, Carolyne!! It would be fun to meet if you're interested, just pm me.

And I'm with you, Robin, I love the food at the fair! I hadn't even visited it until about 5 years ago (didn't grow up here), and thought all they had were corn dogs and funnel cakes. I know lots love them both, I've just never been a fan. Personal choice. But then I discovered all the options! I love the pork products, the BBQ vendors, smoked turkey legs, the curly potato chips with vinegar and salt (i ask to have mine double fried so i get crispy potato chips!!), and I've had an awesome gyros there before. And, the roooooasted corn!!! I don't know why it always tastes better than what I can do at home, and maybe it really doesn't, but I love me roasted corn at the Fair!! mmmmmmmmm.....

Tanya,
Confirming that it is Morgan's Fudge. Your friend must ABSOLUTELY try the Bourbon Fudge ... it is THE reason I make a trip out to the State Fair. It is incredibly scrumptious. I end up buying 5 pounds and freezing it to dole out over the course of the winter. Oh, how I love their fudge!!!

I sure love the roasted corn, too, and with a lemonade shake-up! Last year I missed the Fair for the first time in my adult life. We never went when I was a kid. Dad was working two jobs most of the time to make ends meet. Last year, Jim wasn't in a Fair mood and I was too exhausted due to my health problems. I'm going this year once anyway. I'll be able to stay if I can get there early enough to rent a motorized cart. One year I got there just a few minutes too late. Three men rode off on the last three carts. The woman explained that these same men came every day of the Fair and rented three carts for the day. She thought it was sweet but that meant I had to rent a regular chair and someone had to push me around and that got old real fast. I don't resent their pleasure but...oh well. Still, I got my roasted corn and lemonade, not to mention my chocolate Ehrlers cone and my Chinese veggies and rice dinner. Uh, and my Mackinac Island Fudge.
I wonder if it is real Mackinac Island fudge?? Good tho! Then I stop by Morgan's and pick up some more fudge. I always stay inside and check out the business booths. I especially like Pride of the Counties.
