This thread is about Ace of Cakes. That article was about Cake Boss. Two completely different shows.

Attn: Bourdain lovers and Duff Goldman haters...

by Dan L. » Thu Dec 02, 2010 11:49 am

December means many a holiday special on the telly. On Monday, December 6, Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations Holiday Special is airing on the Travel Channel. This year he's joined by Michael Ruhlman and Marky Ramone. In this tidbit preview they're gathered around the table, discussing what they want from Santa ("to take the Millennium Falcon for a spin!"). The episode will also feature Mario Batali, David Chang, Pat LaFrieda, Duff Goldman  and apparently a sock puppet named Mr. Socks.

I'm betting Goldman dresses up like the Sock Monkey...What a goofball, I can't believe a guy like Tony would actually sit at the same table as that idiot.

I find it funny that people judge someone based off a persona they put forth when the TV cameras are smack in their faces.

The man has a successful business. And then a major TV network approaches him to feature him in a TV series. So, now the man has a successful business, free advertising on a major TV network, and a salary from said TV network.

It's America at it's best. or maybe worst.

And then there's hating on someone (successful, nonetheless) for tenuous reasons. Maybe that's American at it's best. or maybe worst.
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.

I agree with Matthew. I don't understand the haters. I'm not a big Rachel Ray fan, either, but I don't hate her. I always think "what if my own son or daughter was lucky/hardworking enough to be paid a lot of money to have their business featured on tv to millions of people, thereby making them comfortable for life? Would I be disdainful, or happy for them?"

As do I. I don't understand why success should make someone so hated. Lest we forget Charm City Cakes is a Baltimore local. If the sentiment of many on this forum is that local is the only way then this guy should get a pass...unless Charm City Cakes adopts the Starbucks business model.

I would have more respect for Rachel Ray and Sandra Dee and their ilk if they were legitimately successful and not just marketable. Rachel Ray has recipes for making bacon in a microwave (put bacon on paper towel, place in microwave) and I don't think I need to bring up Sandra's Kwanzaa or Hanukkah cakes.

And these people are on television telling the general public how to prepare food.

shudder.

What we all need to remember is the majority of Americans cook very basic meals on a every day basis. Very seldom if ever do they create a culinary masterpiece. Shows like those you mentioned help them step up the basic meals without a great deal of work or show them a simpler way to do something. There obviously is a huge demand for this type of show since so many exist and thrive.

Duff and the Ace of Cakes is something very different. It showcases culinary creativity which is something very few people even attempt. It's place is more entertainment oriented than the ones you mentioned.

The case with all of these shows is that we can turn them off or changing the channel if we don't like them so why should anyone criticize them? They obviously have a market.

I find Sandra Lee's brand of crazy to be hawt.

I have nothing against Duff, just his show. I'm sure he's a guy you could share a beer or six.
