I remember Empress is in Hike's Point, but I thought August Moon was on
Lexington Rd just west of Grinstead Dr. AM is a great place.

I call it a classic.

Oriental House sign is a classic from a time when Shelbyville Road wasn't lined with ubiquitous and crappy corporate signs. The best Chinese restaurant sign in Louisville history, however, was the "amorous pandas" at a Chinese joint on the site of an old Lum's on Goldsmith, just east of Bardstown Rd (site currently occupied by a DQ)!

I was upset when the Arby's on Shelbyville Road moved down the street and didn't take that great old sign with them.

Indeed. I hated seeing the old Arby's sign come down. :(

The wife and I always called that place, "Two pandas (deleted)ing." And now for the downside to the Oriental House: No Cold Noodles!

Get them to go and eat em' straight out o' the box for lunch the next day. My wife thinks I'm weird for eating Asian food leftovers cold... But sometimes, I get a hankering for crunchy veggies and quagulated sauces.

I Love That Sign!

by Eliza W » Sat Aug 11, 2007 10:27 am

The sign is wonderful. It's not homogeneous on a stretch of Shelbyville that's pretty unlovable.

Of course, I also can't understand why people think that Norton Commons is beautiful, and I have a home decorated with mid-century modern, so take it for what it's worth.

It's not the actual sign that's bad....if you drive from the Mall headed toward town, you'll see that the sign looks like it was hit by some trajectory. It is in need of repair, that's all. I think that always looks unprofessional! Remember China Town's "Din-In" sign? Ditto for the 2 pandas, I almost drove off the road when they first put that up....

Well I'll give you that one. The whole building could use some rehab to be honest.

I grew up on Chen's on Dixie. I miss that place so much, almost as much as I miss Kim's.

August Moon has fabulous carry out and their bar staff is really fun so you can have a martini while you wait...you get like twice as much of their amazing hot and sour soup on carry out orders too- ha.

Yes, it is very civilized to have a martini at the bar at August Moon while one waits of the carry-out order. I must admit that I've enjoyed that routine on more than one occassion.
