Hmm.

Just for the record, Clay - not saying you did this - but I did my master's thesis on emoticons*, and I can testify that the addition of a smiley does not always take the rude out of a rude remark.

Also - I'm with Joel on Valu Mkt. Helps that they're walking distance from my home, but I'd also make the trip if it weren't. Not a big Kroger fan at all.

I'm not really interested in this thread anymore, but I thought I'd be polite enough to answer genuine questions.

Thank you, Matthew, for answering my questions. I just know how good you are with details (I wish I were that good). I am in no way aligned with the other sarcastic replies. I thought it was an entertaining topic and I'm surprised at the outcome.

Chris LM wrote:Before everyone gets all worked up against Kroger & for Valu Market remember this, I ended up with four packs of horrible smelling chicken in 6 months from Valu Market, and their management did not seem to really care. I am back at Kroger now, not really happy about that but at least I am not getting rotten chicken once a month.

I purchased rotten organic cottage cheese and outdated green juice from Valu Mkt recently and the mgr that handled me gave me a ten dollar gift card as well as a cash refund and told me he was going to have a word with the sales reps because they are supposed to check the dates. I told him that I hope that it doesn't result in the cessation of carrying that product (the cottage cheese, not the juice - everybody carries Odwalla) because it's one of the reasons I shop there, and he promised me it wouldn't. I took the opportunity while talking to him to tell him how deplorable I think their cashiers' attitudes and demeanors have been since they day they took over (I reeaaaly stressed it, and have felt it's been the worst front end impression at any outlet I've ever patronized), but I credited them for making some improvements (replacements). He agreed and said it was something they were keenly aware of, and since then I continue to see improvements and a management presence near the checkout lanes. Huge strides, in fact. We talked about other grievances I bear, as well, because there were things I thought he should know, and he couldn't have been more eager to hear me out on all of them. That's my main mkt, I love it.

Damn, based on Clay's logic I was going to skip the words and go straight to the "flipping the bird" emoticon.

Haha, Robin, I just noticed your smooshed Al Gore comment - very cute.

To Matthew, I wish I had your freedom of speech sometimes. But even without it, I can at times stand in your defense. Keep the thinking alive, please. You have character depth and everyone deserves a benign bitch session.

Flipping birds on here is bad, though, right? It reminds me that we're all just talking in types and don't see the person.

***also notable, from my perspective, your "painted scene of inconveniences" does me in. You had every right to bitch. It's not like you walked out with a cart of groceries and refused to pay for them (see other thread ;-) ). I was sold when you said you had to wait for a cart and the majority of them were being used for relocation of your shelves, in a maze of obstacles. Your thread was a warning of irritable inconvenience, not a call for a ban.

I'm pretty happy with the renovation. Since they started working toward it they added Kroger Gas, and they have significantly upgraded many of the selections in the store--most notably in the deli. When I've shopped at the Highlands Kroger or Holiday Manor Kroger I've seen many things available that were not available at Goss or Poplar Level.

The Wine and Spirits store is open now, btw. I haven't been inside.

Thanks for the kind words Jackie. I've always been an outspoken person, but I try to do so with respect. There's depth of thought and conversation on this forum lacking from much of the online and "real word" (non)dialogue out there. Better yet, there are also a number of funny people (Steve P, Robin, and Carla G to name only a few) around these parts. It takes all kinds.

But yes, flipping birds is probably bad. Doesn't mean I don't think about doing it, or worse, actually doing it from time to time.

Gary,

Well, I could have answered that for them. Yes, you do need help.

Just saw this post- and I totally agree. From my customer perspective, I shouldn't have to have a huge frustration to try to find items in a grocery store, having to dodge hoses and blocked isles. If I shopped here I'd be very grateful for Matthew's post. Out of shopping carts would have sent me right back out the door. If I shopped here I'd be very grateful for Matthews post. All of these could have been avoided if they paid for overtime instead of inconveniencing the customer...

I did my grocery shopping last night at the Goss Kroger. I wasn't even aware that they had knocked the wall down and extended the store since I was just in late last week. The workers seemed to be focused on the pharmacy. There were certainly empty aisles, but we didn't have any trouble locating anything but the cream cheese. I'm excited that our Kroger is almost finished and I especially appreciate the gas station. I also kind of like the new floors. Keep in mind that my husband and I go Krogering a lot because we're always forgetting something.

On another note, I've complained at least four times in the last six months about the meat counter. They need a bell so that I don't have to wait 10 minutes for a guy with earbuds in to kind of help me. Every time I complain, the manager writes down the bell idea and says that s/he'll take care of it. I've even emailed corporate. Still no bell!

As far as Valu, I shop there occasionally for some hard to find items. Kroger's closer to me though.

Well as long as were Kromplaining, I would like to vent about the removal of Red Gold brand whole tomatoes from my store. Actually, I have not been able to get them at either the Shelbyville or the Middletown stores. In their place is the Kro brand whole peeled tomatoes.Bah...
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

Just to be clear its only the "whole peeled" 28 oz can. The other Red Gold product line up seems to be intact.

This is the closest Kroger to my house, but I generally have stayed away because it's produce section has been sort of lackluster and I've just always found the place sort of depressing. I think the expansion was done at a low cost, given the neighborhood. I know someone mentioned the new floor was nice, but I don't care for it, at all. To me, it's a cheap way to finish out the store, and gives it a Wal-mart feel.
