Dick Yuengling was a delegate for George W. Bush at the 2000 Republican National Convention. That really says it all, I think.

Political affiliation and union busting aside, if he's paying unskilled laborers $20 an hour and 100% health insurance, that doesn't seem too evil to me.

Also, in my opinion, the issue with mega-salary CEO pay differentials should be with public corporations, not privately owned companies. If you want to start a widget business and make 100 million dollars, knock yourself out. If you were elected to run a publicly held corporation and you're making 20 million a year and the company is making billions and you have 20,000 employees you aren't insuring and are paying minimum wage, thats what I have a problem with.

Personally I can't stand George Bush but the fact that Dick Yuengling was a supporter means nothing to me and the fact that he "busted" the union means nothing either. That's his own private family business. I'll concede that its not as good as buying local, but I don't feel like a 200 person company should be in the same class as a mega-corp. I certainly don't feel guilty buying their product.

I concur that this is a compelling argument. It's harder to hate a guy who apparently treats his employees well. I'd argue, though, that busting an existing union is a little more in-your-face than working within the law to argue against unionizing a small, family-owned company. By this account, though, there's some question whether Mr. Y is opposing the union within the law. He seems to have a plantation mentality: My way, and I'll treat you right; otherwise, the highway.

And speaking of the plantation, there's also the point that just as Marse Smith treating the slaves on his plantation very well doesn't stand up as an argument against slavery, a similar argument-from-exceptions doesn't stand up as an argument against workplace organizing.

The important thing to remember is that Yuengling's flagship beer is golden-colored average lager at best, and largely undeserving of preference compared to the incredible diversity of craft beer in general. If and when it comes here, it will be oohed and aahed as the "new thing," as we've seen other beers greeted that are (a) brewed somewhere else, and (b) not altogether interesting.

I detest Dubya, and I loathe most of what he stood/stands for, including union gutting. But this isn't about Dubya. It's about ordinary beer being accorded extraordinary attention merely because of a label, and the mythology attached to it, and someone's drunken memories of a clambake somewhere that have little to do with the beer used to wash them down. Sorry. I'm in one of these truthful moods lately.

A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it's better to be thoroughly sure.

No. Yuengling didn't start shipping out of PA until the late '90's. Are you thinking of Elsinore beer?

I agree with your statement in itself. However, I don't consider Yuengling to be in the craft beer category. I consider it as more of a macro-brew and it definitely takes the cake in that category. (I may be wrong in my definition of craft beer vs macro-brews) Nevertheless, comparing macros to craft beers is like comparing fast food to fine dining. I think that Yuengling is the best "fast food" beer.
