That is somewhat a testament to what a great dining city we have. It's hard to drive 20 minutes to a restaurant when you have to pass so many good ones to get there. We have no problem driving 15-20 minutes to try a new and exciting restaurant, but usually dine within 10 minutes of home. (Mojito, Rumba, My Patria, Jack’s, Lou Lou, BBC, Simply Thai, Hiko, Napa, Bombay, Bristol, ect.) Human nature, I guess?

I've never been to Westport General, but only because of the drive. 35 minutes each way can take a good chunk out of an evening, especially during the week. It is probably the only place we have not been because of driving. We typically tie our weekend dining into some other activity, so we dine near the action, typically downtown.

Back to the original topic....
A couple of my personal favorites that I can't believe they left off this list....

Lou Mitchell's in Chicago. I love this place. IMHO, It's the quintessential breakfast joint. They give you orange wedges and prunes in little monkey bowls with everything.

Tupelo Honey in Asheville, NC. The food here is really good but if I was choosing a meal to line up for(they don't take reservations and the lines are LONG) it would definitely be for the breakfast.

I totally agree with you on those two, Dan. I didn't mean to implay by the post that I was agreeing with the selection.

Yeah, I can buy into that argument...I mean even out here in the hinterlands we have some darn good choices without going inside the Watterson (and vice versa as we all know)...and like I said in my original post, of late we've become just as guilty as the next person in not bothering to drive across town. This could probably be a good topic for someone's cultural anthropology essay.

I'm okay with you calling it a criticism. Because that's what it is. And it's the absolute truth. Steve P saying what no one else wants to say.

I have no idea why people not going out of their way to eat a restaurant is a negative or something to be criticized.

Especially on this forum that constantly extols the virtues of eating locally...

I, personally, am more than willing to travel a little bit, on occasion, to try a new place or an old favorite.. However, in a town where there are good restaurants close to all major neighborhoods, why would you criticize anybody for limiting their dining dollars to their immediate neighborhood?

It seems not only judgmental, but also also completely baseless, to criticize someone for which geographic area of the city they choose to dine.

No judgement here. Of course I would love everyone to eat at my place. My main point is, whatever you do---- EAT OUT A LOT !!!!!!!

I'll drive as far as I need to for a great meal. I'll go out to Westport, I'll go downtown, I'll go J-Town, if the place is really good, I'll go.

Yay, restaurants!

That's pretty much where I am, including the "Yay, restaurants" motto. I joke around about going outside the Watterson, and I think whoever made the point about the good indies in the 'burbs being more spread out was on to something. But it's not really all that hard to get me out to Buckner or LaGrange or New Albany or even ... Westport ...

I remember , as a kid, my family or friends would often drive a fair distance to get a great meal. We'd drive out to The Colonel's Lady, Science Hill or Doe Run Inn and think nothing of it. BUT... around the 1970's when law enforcement started cracking down on drinking and driving things changed. (Not that we habitually drove sloshed but then you might be cited for driving with only 2 drinks under your belt.) It seemed after that people ate closer to home.

I wasn't a criticism...and it wasn't judgmental (both of which would imply that I either -care- about or am somehow affected by how far people travel when they dine....I don't and I'm not). It was a fricking observation. The observation being that for whatever reason a lot of people here in Louisville seem to be very adverse to driving across town for much of anything. It's not a bad thing...it's not a good thing (I'm not attaching any judgment to it at all)...They have their reasons and I'm good with any of them. It was simply a lifestyle observation about the general population compared to other places I've lived and based solely on what I've observed since living here.

So basically I'll tell you the same thing I recently told another Forumbyter...don't go attaching meaning or definition to my post that were not intended.

It may help to say that Steve isn't from this area...nor am I. But I'd have to agree with his observation, people laugh at me and my husband for going all the way to Westport Village for breakfast...or going to Prospect to get the best ribs because we live in Fern Creek...which seems to be the other side of the moon the way some talk about it. It's not really that long of a drive, but it's all relative to what you know, I guess. Coming from Detroit, it was pretty normal to drive 30-45 minutes to get anywhere...even if it wasn't far it still took some time.

But as I said, it's all in perspective and what your priorities are...I want to keep it local, but if there's good food out there, I'm going to find it! wherever it may be...

Scathing indeed, but I was referring to Matthew D's post, not yours. You clearly stated that you did not mean it as a criticism, and I took no issue with your post.

Matthew said that such behavior is indeed worthy of criticism, and I disagreed with him, not that he isn't entitled to his opinion also.

Nevertheless, this was my first time getting put in my place via the internet, and it was moderately exciting, so thanks for the experience.

I will try to be clearer in the future.
