Because they don't really want the hassle of takeout and would rather not fool with it? Or they figure a lot of people use Mexican, like Chinese, as a source of takeout, and they'd rather have people eat in? Because they're willing to accommodate regulars who really want a takeout meal, but they don't want to get the downscale image of a takeout place? Because they'd rather see their servers getting the tips?

Frankly, if the charge is nominal, it's hard for me to see anybody getting really worked up over it.

I guess that's my point. The charge really isn't high enough to discourage people from doing it. It's just a hassle at the levels that were mentioned and they certainly are not making anything off it. If it was 10% or so I could see it becoming a factor to discourage take out.

I downloaded the takeout menu, they clearly state they add 6% to take out order totals.

Okay. We've determined there will be a fee for take-out. Has anyone tried the food? A short review would be nice before I call in a carry-out order. :D

The food is good, just a notch above every other "Mexican" place in the area, but so are the prices. Our group didn't find it any more authentic then El Nopal, Los Aztecs, ect. The chips and salsa were the standouts for me. Both were super fresh and tasty. The "white sauce" everyone is talking about was not impressive, tasted like ranch dip to us. All the staff were super nice and very accommodating, no problems there. My major problem with the place is the alcohol. The margaritas are very small (ice to liquid ratio) and very weak and cost $6, Tecate cans are $4, and no draft or local beers. We found everything alcohol related to be horrible values.

Something interesting I heard about Chuy's is that unlike a slew of other Louisville Mexican restaurants, they don't use lard in their refried beans. For people that either don't eat meat, or don't eat meat much, that stuff can be kind of hard on the stomach.

Now we know why the mark up takeout orders! Because they can't charge you the ridiculous mark-up for alcoholic beverages! They have to get their profits somehow.

Right. Anyway.

They charge 6% for a "packing fee" and include chips/salsa with every Togo Order. If you don't like it, then dine in or stay away. For people saying this is no big deal, there are a lot of people making a big deal about it in the first place.

I'm going to try it out. If it's bad, then at least I'll have learned first hand.

We all wanted to go there for dinner and treat our kitchen staff, but Chuy's said they cannot accommodate a party of 18!!!
:x
I guess they are making plenty of money off 2 and 4 tops...

too bad too, when the kitchen crew goes out, we drink, a lot... :(

That would have been one hell of a bar bill.

Most places would kill for that bar tab, not to mention the rest of the bill.

They may have someone that only does take out in the evenings so the charge is to cover their extra pay? I know a few other places, Chili's and Applebee's come to mind, that have a server spend the night handling take out but the server gets a more normal wage since tips are slim on to-go. The cost of togo containers aren't exactly cheap compared to chips and bread. Even at 6%, a $30 tab will only run an extra $1.80.

I'm sure we'll get around to trying them soon...seeing that the other half is a mexicaholic. And after looking over the menu, I'm a little ticked that dinner is already in the oven...may have to go this weekend, sounds pretty good!

We ate here yesterday. At 2:30, the place was slammed. We chose to eat in the bar, which was great and service was swift despite the crowd. I loved the atmosphere. I found it to be much more than a "notch" above other places. I has the vegetarian combo, which was a vegatble enchilada and chile relleno and rice and refried beans as sides. Super good- the enchilada was filled with diced zucchini, yellow squash, peppers, onions and spinach and was rolled in a fresh blue tortilla. It was well seasoned and delicious. Ditto for the relleno; very good, spicy and filling! The refried beans and rice were great, too. They have a chips and salsa bar where you can help yourself. The portions were huge and I had two meals from mine. They make everything fresh- all the sauces, chips, tortillas, etc. You can watch the ladies rolling out the dough making the various tortillas. The kids seem to really enjoy this. I can't comment about alcohol prices, I was drinking diet soda. All in all, a really good experience- fun atmosphere, good food and service. Trust me, I don't have many good things to say about chains in general, but this is a place we will frequent.
