Re: Police roadblocks around St. Joseph Orphans Picnic?

I grew up in Anderson County where there was 1 catholic church and they didn't have a picnic. I remember coming to Louisville in high school during picnic season and seeing all the church picnic ads on Bud and Miller Lite signs! Blew my little small town mind. AS for the fallout, it always concerns me when that many people who have quite possibly had a little too much to drink hit the roads in mass whether its a festival, picnic, or sporting event. Hope everyone is safe out there tonight!

-Told to me by an Irish priest many years ago...while he was drunk in an elevator after a friends wedding...

When I was thirteen or thereabouts, my sister (a year older) and I took a kid who had just moved to town and joined our soccer team to our Catholic parish picnic. It's important to note that this kid was from an evangelical Christian family who had just returned from two years of missionary work in Bolivia. As my sister and I were the veteran alter boy/girl trainers for the new alter boys/girls in the parish, we struck up a conversation with the parish priest while at the picnic. During the conversation, he said something along the lines of, "Well, make sure you play plenty of money on the prize booths. I'd tell you to have a few drinks too, but that will have to wait a few years."

Let's just say our friend was more-than surprised at how the Catholics operate.

Why would he be surprised. JC turned water into wine. An excellent arrangement.

I was proudly dissing Mitch and Rand at the 130th fancy farm picnic this year, brought lots of mutton and bbq home, and lost my a** (thanks conway law) at bingo. They've really really cracked down on the beer drinkers at that one. I suppose as it's still a dry county they had to. I must say that the crowd quality at St. Joe's doesn't really seem "catholic" at least after dark. We don't all run around double parking and throwing trash while swilling Bud Light. I'm almost positive they're episcapalians. I'm going to go tomorrow w/ the little one, but I'll go nice n early to avoid the revelers.

Robin, you'll enjoy this. As a gesture of Episcopalian outreach(!), I am volunteering in the beer booth at St. Joe's tomorrow night for the late shift (gasp.) It'll be my third year in a row. As another twist, this particular beer truck crew is organized by my very good friend who happens to be Jewish. Yes, it's a Catholic picnic, patronized by many Catholic folk, but it's bigger than that. It's kind of a marvel, really. You'll find me in the back pulling beers from the taps - at this particular event, I don't love being on the front line - too chaotic. I can do a mean pour, so I like to stick to the background. The mayhem later in the evening is something to behold. I can definitely confirm the presence of BBC in the past, and I'm sure they're back this year. The St. Joe's demographic includes people who like good local beer with their fried whatever-in-a-basket.

So I will once again be braving the crazy evening shift. I'll report back if there's anything interesting to report. Like if I happen to win something awesome before my shift starts.

Antonia, your ecumenism speaks well of you. :)

Do, please, give us a report. And try to tell those guys that they don't really HAVE to steal stuff out of the neighbors' yards and toss litter everywhere in Crescent Hill as they go. (Yeah, I know it's a minority, but it still makes this great charitable event a little less than popular among those who live nearby.)

Robin, I keep telling you: chain your pink lawn flamingos to the house. I don't even know where you would go to purchase replacements these days.

This is much too tasteful a neighborhood for pink flamingos. However, I am quite worried about the concrete statuary. Those gnomes are worth something!

I will be working the restaurant gift certificates booth again this year ( 2nd shift ). I will come look you up when I am done.
Our tent is back close to the beer garden anyway..... :D :D

A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it's better to be thoroughly sure.

Episcopalians are quite similar, but it's Chardonnay, and not so much of it.

You know what they say about Episcopalians, Robin? If you can spell it, then you're one.

~ Told to me at church a long time ago when I was a kid. And, actually still went to church.

Or you spell it differently from your neighbor, but you still go to communion together? ;)

I play at Volare on Fridays and know of at least three customers that were taken Downtown at that July roadblock. Imagine how many they could grab after St. Joe's. It seems it would be hard to ignore that kind of windfall.
BBC. Really! I'll take the "swill". At least it doesn't taste like soap.
