I'll want more evidence, but my initial suspicion is that as the chain grows, they're moving over to more "efficient" production techniques.

I think there's a really interesting story there that relates to tensions surrounding the ideas of chain, independent, mini-chain, efficiency, profit, etc.

I've been a Graeter's fan since my years in Dayton, but the variance in quality of their product recently has been troubling. Take the rasberry sorbet. Ranges from very firm to too soft from visit to visit.

I actually go to Homemade more now when I want such a treat (not often). Have been meaning to give Comfy Cow a visit. Quite out of the way for me. Hit up Dairy Kastle last night, as it is maybe 1/4 mile from my place. Hard to mess up soft serve and melted dipping chocolate.
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.

Us, too, but it's worth it. Believe me. They really did set the bar at a new level. (And with the Westport Road exits on the Watterson open now, a run out there SEEMS closer from Crescent Hill by taking I-64 and the Watterson around from Grinstead. Huge waste of fossil fuels I know, but it's such a breeze. 8) )

The peaches in the pint we brought home from the store itself, 3 weeks ago, tasted sort of sour and the peaches themselves were hard as rocks.

I live as close to I 71 as you do to 64. We love the new exit.

Yeap, I live on Washburn and the new exit has cut the cross traffic from Lagrange to Westport in half.

It's out of the way for us, too, but trust me, it is worth the trip. The Salted Caramel may be the best ice cream I've ever eaten...

The Comfy Cow must have been listening. They just posted this on FaceBook:

"Everything is Peachy Keen. We wanted to wait until we could use only local peaches and then only when they were at their absolute ripest. Well, starting tomorrow, we'll let you decide if it was worth the wait."

I can't say anything about the peach..but I had the Bourbon Ball tonight and it was phenomenal! it was stuffed full of yummy yummy chunks of chocolate. I have a 3 yr old, so we got him a plain cup of vanilla with sprinkles. Of course he didn't eat it, so I, being a martyr, sacrificed and ate part of it. I was taught not to waste! I have to say, there was nothing special about the vanilla..tasted about the same as kroger brand vanilla.

I had the salted dulce de leche and the cookies and cream the other night and wasn't all that impressed. They were both good, but not great. The cookies and cream actually reminded me very much of the same flavor Private Selection cookies and cream at Kroger. (Which I do like, but don't think of as a premium ice cream,)

I'd have to disagree with Clay on the salted dulce de leche. I found it to be very very tasty...the richness and creaminess were not something found in many other ice creams.

Over the weekend, the wife and I were back...I had a scoop of the Mexican Ole' Chocolate. It was good also. It started off spicy, kind of like a gingersnap cookie. Then the onslaught of chocolate hit the tip of the tongue and mouth. Finally the heat of the bit of CAYENNE PEPPER they use lit up the back of the palate. This was a very good and complex scoop of ice cream.

Enjoy. DD

I'm with you on the dulce de leche. I don't know if I have ever had a better scoop of ice cream. I wasn't a huge fan of the peach; the texture was off and the flavor not so peachy. The Mexican Ole' was a bomb for me. The ginger snap flavor you described, I'll call it pumpkin pie spice flavor, killed it for me.

The first time I had the salted dulce de leche I thought is was spectacular. The last time, too salty.
