Robin,
I would expect this typical comment former X Courier Journal reporter. A true liberal remark. I guess you don’t shop at Wal-Mart? Remember, Wal-mart is a true American company that provides many jobs throughout our great U.S.A. Plus they provide food and good for American’s that can’t afford to shop at Whole Foods or other over priced stores. As you somewhat stated” Let's face it, your former relationship with the CJ Paper connection also invites parody. Just remember many Chain and foreign own companies employees support local restaurants and business, such as myself! Doug Chin

No, I do not.

Low-pay, low-skill, non-union jobs, many of them without benefits, and a strong inclination to keep things that way.

What??? Brown Forman heirs got class but the Walmart heirs have no class? How does this diminish the class of 21c?

Let's see. 21c ... Walmart. Walmart ... 21c. Either you get it or else you don't.

I think I get it. You hate Walmart so therefore anything that involves Walmart has no class.

I'd personally prefer that the Walmart family do more to provide more of their employees w/ health insurance so that the tax payers don't have to but maybe that's just me. I'm personally sad to see a local establishment teaming up w/ such a horrible company. I don't personally want Louisville to spread anywhere (it's fine right where it is). I'd prefer it if they came up w/ something unique to their area.

And lets not forget the 'alleged' catagorical descrimination against women in management and the class action suit against them. I do not shop at Wal-mart because of that, among other things.

So, where do you shop? Do you know for sure where you are shopping is union, pay more, and offer benefits? Again name where you shop! Many people that work for Wal-Mart may not be able to gain employment at some of the unnamed places you shop, due to the lack of education or physical limitations. At least they are working and not dependent on handouts. So when you make a broad statement all you do is slap a hard working Wal-Mart employee in the face! Again tell us where you shop.

I try to buy locally as much as I can, Doug. Please don't yell at me, though. When people demand that I do this or do that, I tend to dig in my heels. :-)

I agree, sort of, although it might have been nice to shoot for some more with-it locations before spreading out to ... Bentonville? Let's face it, the Walmart connection also invites parody.

Speaking of inviting parody, Louisville doesn't exactly stack up as a "with it" location compared to lots of places in the World...or even in the U.S.

I think we trump Bentonville, though ... ;) More seriously, we're at least visible nationally on the restaurant and hospitality scene. It probably goes back to the Derby being here, but the renovation of the Brown and the Seelbach in the '80s, followed by the arrival of 21c, has made a small mark for the River City.

They also run many many other companies into the ground. And I'm just not talking about competition. I'm talking about the very companies they buy from. Supporters of the model call it operating efficiency or whatever euphemism you want to toss out there. I call it being a bully.

While that may be how capitalism works, the customer is not free of responsibility here. We've created Wal-Mart into the monster that it is. If you want to pull the wool over your eyes and write it off as being "a true American," "providing jobs," and "providing food," then that's your doing.

I recognize both the positive and negatives. Sure seems like you've drank the Wal-Mart kool-aid and lack the ability to see more than what keeps your fiction alive. For the cheap food and jobs, take the time to also see the discrimination, the issues with benefits, the creation of brownfields, the market bullying, etc.
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.

I think this thread needs to go away. It reminds me of what my mother always said " Never discuss religion or politics with people" . It sounds like this topic is falling into this catagory and it is going to make enemies of one another. The golden rule " If you can't say anything nice, then keep your mouth shut".

I'm not exactly sure that's "the" golden rule. And the great thing about this board is that this type of discussion flares up but we all eventually come back to talking about food and liking each other.
