I've checked the site for a long time for solid reviews and ideas on new restaurants to go out and try, but this is the first time I've felt compelled to post, mainly because most of the restaurants I really enjoy seem to be doing well and already get plenty of kudos and good press.
Anyway, El Rumbon has been a newcomer into my regular rotation and I enjoy it a great deal. The last time I was there, Renald actually mentioned hotbytes and I told him I would sign up and give him some props, so here goes.
Renald does up some quality cuban-style street food, but I feel as though his locations aren't going to draw in many newcomers, in that that although they are in high-traffic areas, they aren't highly visible, and there is minimal signage.
He now actually has set locations, rotating every 15 days between 3 of the Oxmoor Car Dealerships on Shelbyville Road, Ford, Mazda, and I don't recall the last (Toyota?). Either way, you can always call the number and see where he is.
Most of what I enjoy about the food has already been touched on, but what I enjoy the most include --the soft-yet-sturday cuban style sandwich bread that he uses that provides the perfect foundation for any sandwich you might order. As another poster mentioned , it is one of the best sandwich bread I've ever had(in my opinion, of course)
--The unidentifiable(by me at least) "spicy sauce" as he describes it which has an almost aoli/mojo/yougurty quality that I find strangely addictive and ask for with everything I order
--THE RICE, which was already mentioned, but has changed in the last few weeks. His already-delicious chorizo-laden rice is now redolent of the salty flavor of Serrano ham.
2 of my favorite sandwiches are the Cuban, which although is less traditional than that of Havana Rumba, is equally enjoyable, albeit in a different way...and the baked pork, which features tender chunks of pork, grilled onions, and of course, the sauce.
I have also sampled the beefsteak sandwich, the ribs, and the chorizo sandwich, were all quite good as well.
He also does a few American standards, including some fried chicken i saw him hand-battering for another customer. It looked quite good, but I cannot attest to its quality, never having tried it.
My next target will be one of his burritos, which I'm sure, especially if they include his rice, will be outstanding.
He also told me that he would make a vegetarian dish for my girlfriend(a vegetarian) if I wanted, but the options would seem somewhat limited
Regardless, if you're in the mood for some delicious cuban-style street food, give it a shot, as I want to make sure he stays in the St. Matthews area near my home, so that I can continue to enjoy his wares
