Becca, if you're reading, is the stir fry dish with tofu still on the menu? Diana quite likes it, and living the nefarious life I do, if she likes, that's more opportunity to eat wings (good as ever my last few visits) and quaff ales. If it isn't, we need to come up with something veggie (for one who also is lactose tolerant) for her.

I'm determined not to let my Wort Hog mug get so dirty again through lack of use.

And, I'm glad that Marty pointed to the Vienna that is flowing at BBC. I got a growler of that a few weeks ago and it's outstanding.

I'd settle for lithium.

Right now, I'm taking my lithe self twisting upstairs to drink two 22-oz bottles of Rogue and watch the baseball game on ESPN.

Long Live BBC

by Doug W » Mon Jul 02, 2007 8:16 am

I missed the review and just read this string. Wow - hard to believe Marty rails on a Brew Pub for being a Brew Pub. I'm perfectly happy to have the Beer come first and the food second. The food has always been pretty good at BBC and complimentary to the beer.

I guess I'm going to have to stop by there tonight just to show some support!

Thanks Marty.

Cheers,

Doug.

I would disagree. The two stars reflect my experiences there with food at least, it was "fair". Not good and not bad I think is a fair assesment. But far from the three star "very good", in my personal opinion.

I'd like to see him review Cumberland. I live pretty much the same distance from both of them and always go to Cumberland. Why? In my opinion everything is better there from the beer to the food being far superior. I'd rate Cumberland with three stars.

Again, this is my opinion but I think most ppl who tried both places several times would agree.

Where's the Cumberland Brews review Marty? Let us see something for comparison!

I agree wholeheartedly. Let's make 3 stars mean something more than above average bar food.

sorry roger the tofu is gone!

by Becca MacGilvray » Mon Jul 02, 2007 10:35 am

Hey Roger--thanks for the praise on the Vienna and the wings. The Vienna ran out on Friday but Jerry replaced it with this delicious new Amber Ale--"Amber Waves of Pain". I think that it is my new favorite!

Alas, the tofu stir fry is no longer with us. The new menu does have some great salads that could be made into wraps and I'm thinking that the Sesame Tuna Salad sans Tuna would be a good option for Diana. However, I will stick a bug in Marshall's ear about menu items with tofu for the future.

Thanks for the support, we've had a lot of good words come our way since the review letting us know that people heartily disagree with Marty's take on the pub!

Cheers!

Becca

PS I hope that it won't be Christmas time before I see you again!

Okay, that's fair. And Marty is definitely improving on his predecessor in spreading out the wealth.

But it would be a whole lot more effective to reinvent the system and start over, rather than picking up the exact same system (and widely ignored descriptions for each rating) as Reigler had used.

By and large, the weakest spots in the Marty-Gannett team (I put it that way because I don't know how much the editors are involved) seem to me to center on words and ratings that don't match, and inconsistency of ratings, with some places that get lower ratings for a review that reads kindly while others get sharply critical reviews yet don't seem to suffer point deflation.

Clean that up. Then we can talk about fairly distributing the points.

In thinking of "words," certainly the headline not matching the text is another issue (assume you included that in your thinking). However, as you would know infinitely better than I would, that's not an uncommon complaint from writers.

Seems that CB checks in with a 3 1/2 stars according to the CJ

Cumberland Brews
Cumberland Brews' dining fare is a worthy match for its beers

Really? That's a shame. I haven't been for a long while, but I was just saying the other day that the BBC is a nice brewpub to go to with a larger group b/c they had so many vegetarian choices.

vegetarian items

by Becca MacGilvray » Tue Jul 03, 2007 10:10 am

Hi Tina, there are still vegetarian items on the menu---particularly our delicious homemade spinach veggie burgers. The boss's sister grows most of the ingredients on her farm and hand patties the burgers just for us. I'm not a vegetarian but I love these burgers--I buy them frozen and keep them at my house for a quick nutritious lunch. Also, the hummus is still available and it is made in house as well.

Cheers,
Becca
