Thanks for your service, J, and happy belated Memorial Day.

J's host IP number does not appear to support this locational assertion. :?

This might just mean that the DOD routed traffic back to the US on a private link to the US (or somewhere else) for connection to the wider internet. There are probably not many direct Internet feeds available in Afghanistan.

True. That's why I used the weasel-worded "does not appear." In the meantime, though - and yes, I'm having this conversation in public because I'm happy to have input - "J"'s overall pattern of user name, avatar and borderline uncivil behavior as a newbie here doesn't really build my confidence. I await his or her contact in hope we can sort this out.

I am all for civility, but is serious consideration being given to "censoring" J's avatar???

While this is not my forum, the possibility of this makes me feel a bit :( :x

I would understand if the avatar was pornographic, depicted violence, etc. but just b/c it is "creepy" should not land the poster in hot water. As stated before, uncivility is a totally different thing.

Thanks. DD

C'mon. I said J's semi-anonymous moniker (which I must have approved, but shouldn't have), along with J's marginal civility, make me want to have a talk with him/her. IN THAT LIGHT, using The Joker as avatar added another element to a pattern that concerns me.

I am not talking about censoring any avatar, and my concern about the Joker avatar stems from my deeper concerns. If it stood alone, I might not like it, but I wouldn't say anything about it.

Was this REALLY unclear, Derrick? If so, I'm sorry for failing to communicate well. But I thought I was fairly specific.

Well, I'm certainly not a fan of the avatar (just realized it was the stupid Obama picture), but in J's defense, he (his gender is apparent from other posts) has posted on other topics. His posts have tended towards the controversial, to some extent, but he has also provided nice commentary on area places, including NABC.

I don't think he's a flamer; probably just a lurker that only posts when his passions are adequately inflamed, for whatever reason.

Also, about the first initial - there are still a lot of folks here whose full last names are not disclosed. Steve A., Steve P., Mark R., Mark H., MikeG, Heather Y., Stephen D., etc. If they're allowed to keep their last name anonymous, I don't see why Mr. Dylan should have to disclose his first name when he has disclosed his last.

Also, while he hasn't posted a ton, he has been a registered member for for almost 16 months. Put down the pitchforks, everyone. Just sayin.

Just for the record, Brad:

First: As I told Derrick about the avatar, I'm concerned about a pattern here. Any individual component of that pattern wouldn't be worth yelling about, standing alone, but as a cluster they're starting to worry me.

Second, there is a big difference between first-name, last-initial, which is permitted in the rules (although I'm supposed to know who you are if you choose that option), and first-initial last-name: As I told "J", using a first initial only is actually more of a community breaker because it denies us the opportunity to interact with the person on a first-name basis and even conceals its gender. Not good. I like calling you Brad and having you call me Robin. Calling J "J" seems more distant, and thus diminishes the closeness of the community.

Also, although I take pains not to be censorious here, I can always fall back on "I'm the Daddy and I make the rules." :D

It is perfectly clear now Robin.

My initial impression was that you took issue with J's first name, lack of civility AND the avatar.

No worries Robin. You are a more than fair "Daddy" of the LHB Forum. DD

And that if you say you are (x) or that you experienced (y,) you need to be verifiable or at least speak like you are. I had this problem with J's posts- that he didn't speak like the person he was representing. It's an old internet forum trick- here you can be anyone you want to be. The problem is that the astute can see through this and the owls can hunt you down. We've seen it before.

Then you have problems, because your credibility becomes an issue...

What would happen if I wax poetic about astronauts, would you then tell us you are going to Mars and that astronauts don't like us very much?

EDIT: The owl reference was from Blade Runner and referred to the man who owned the owl- the guy that played chess with Harrison Ford, who had all the connects and knew things before they happened.
