I'm glad you guys chose the date that conflicts with the UofL game. I enjoy watching college basketball, but I'll never choose to watch a sporting event (excluding the World Series or World Cup) instead of attending a worthwhile function. I'm not the sports fan I used to be, so I no longer understand the appeal of adults planning their lives around college sports.

I'm hoping to make the throwdown. I'm a poor grad student, so I vote for a lower entry fee!

Just for the record, the date chosen is the one that does NOT conflict with the U of L/U Conn game.

With all respect to everyone - and we know we're not all well-to-do (including me) and that we're in a recession. But please note that this event is not just an opportunity for cheap eats. It is a fund-raiser for a very worthy cause, and we have to set the entry high enough to raise a FEW bucks for FEAT.

Hi Guys! This is such a great idea! I have not been online for a while and was catching up when I caught this post! I hope to be in attendance. I do have one huge favor to ask: Please, call this event anything you wish, but leave out the word "annual". Here is my reasoning: It is the very first event and therefore has not yet been established as an"annual" event. Should you have it again next year, it will then be the "2nd annual" ......Using the word annual the very first time an event happens is poor English, as one person pointed out earlier! The 2009 Louisville Hotbytes Throwdown: Shrimp And Grits is an example of what I mean. Hope I haven't offended anyone! Best of luck and let's raise a lot of money!!!

Ok, So it's going to be on February 9th, at Captain's Quarters. What is going to be the official time and contribution amount? I can't wait to go and try this dish. By the way, where did this dish originate? It sounds kind of creole or at least down south.

Alan, Shrimp & Grits is actually down-home food of the Low Country along the South Carolina Coast. It is not at all native to Louisville; Chef Shawn Ward of Jack Fry's introduced it here in the 1990s, and it quickly became so popular that everyone had to have it. In the Low Country, it's simple fare, but here it's become more of an upscale bistro item, and just about every chef spins his own take on it.

Thanks Robin for the info, I thought it sounded southern. Grits are a southern dish, and shrimp would be a food source you would find along the coast. I have been thinking of different ways to prepare shrimp and grits, from the very basic, to more elaborate constructions. It's going to be a blast to try, and great to help a charity as well. In these times, they often end up with shortfalls.

Here you go: Final time, date and price

by Robin Garr » Sat Jan 10, 2009 4:02 pm

Folks, we’ve just finalized the details. Based on your collective input, and our desire to do some collective good as a group, we’re going to ask everyone to dig down a little bit and donate $15 per person. This will be great for FEAT, and a great deal for all of you - where else can you get dinner from some of Louisville’s best and a show for only $15? Time will be 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 9, at Captain's Quarters.

I think it's been a fixture on Science Hill's menu for awhile too. I hope one of the Gill's notices the throwdown. CD
