Dak Shin Saturday night (and Los Gorditas)

by TrishaW » Mon Apr 05, 2010 10:59 am

We went to Dak Shin Saturday night before heading to the movies (Titans). We got seated promptly. The owner (I believe he is or atleast the manager as he is the one we've always seen giving others orders and he is always just in a shirt and slacks) was the one to seat us and to take our order. He was super friendly, as he always is when we go.

We gave our order promptly, the appetizers came out very fast, and the food arrived though brought by someone else. From there the night went downhill. We never saw anyone else come to our table for almost an hour until we flagged down someone to try to order dessert. The guy brought us a menu to look at and never came back to take the order. We sat there for about another 15 minutes until one of my party (only three of us) flagged down someone else and asked for our bill. Our server NEVER came back to the table.

I was glad the food was good, but the service really put me off.

Since we didn't get dessert, and all on here have raved about Los Gorditas trailer we headed across the parking lot. I just got a horchata. One of the guys got a gordita and RAVED about it.

The food is always great there, but service can be spotty at times.

I agree with the previous comment that service at Dak Shin can be spotty at times.

I was also there on Saturday night (7:30ish) and did not experience the same issues as the original poster. Actually, our party commented on how service seemed to actually be better that night than usual. It seemed as though they were training a new employee that night as well.

We were there this weekend as well. No real problems, food was great as always, but the big C in the front window was not a pleasant addition to the decor. And it takes a few mistakes to earn a 79% score.

And on a separate note, how does one properly eat a dosa? I usually just tear into them with fingers and the occasional fork.

They were BUSY Saturday night, but I hate having to hunt down my bill in ANY restaurant. The guy disappeared into the kitchen, and never came back out. I'm not sure if there was a problem back there or what, but I shouldn't have had to sit there for about an hour with no one checking on us after our food arrived.
Yeah, the C put me off too. At that point we had driven from Etown specifically to eat there before going over to Preston for the movie.

Remember that a C in a restaurant most often represents a "critical violation," which may be - and often is - something as stupid as an employee leaving a bottle of ammonia out on a table top or the equivalent. The Health Department comes back in a week or two and re-inspects.

If the C is still there next month, I'd worry. But not until then.

Also, it is not rude to inquire of management when you see the C ... they'll usually gladly tell you the tale. And if not, then I might also worry a little.

Oh I understand about the C and critical violations and that it's temporary. I've often said, if in the course of my own inspection if I ever saw my score heading toward a B, I'd grab a bottle of Windex and put it in the fridge to get a C. Because it's temporary. And I could get my A back really quick.

It's the 79 that made me pause. That's several critical violations.

I finally made it to the lunch buffet last week. I was with a rather large group from work and service was excellent; in addition to our server, the owner came to our table several times. I tried everything on the buffet and it was all delicious and fresh. I meant to notice the current rating but admittedly forgot. (Probably because I was trying not lapse into a food coma!)

A clarification of getting a check at Dakshin based on going there fairly often. They do not bring a check. When you are done, you go up to the register. They will come right away as soon as they see you, ring you up and check you out. I believe that is their standard process.... (I've never got a check there)

I would like to make a comment on service and food. I lived very close to Dak Shin and tried their food on several occasions. As far as the food goes i found myself often discounted as American, when I eat Indian food I expect very strongly seasoned spicy food and I've experienced a watered down version several times which i can find understandable but not necesary. We often got take out food and once we walked out after waiting thirty minutes for a carry out order to be taken. As far as service it was explained to us they preffer the diner to sit and relax after a meal, and I sat much longer than I preffer to wait. Durring the explanation of their service style I realized the server had not addressed my girlfriend other than to take her order. He made comments as to why we were not yet married and why it was I who needed to get home to clean my home and not my girlfriend cleaning my house. I understand the difference of cultures but we both found it offensive and it was a third strike, we have not been back. Furthermore our service the night we were offended was very slow as we observed only one other table in the restaurant, an eight top who had already received entrees. Los Gorditas rocks! Support some hard woking people cooking all day long in a hot trailer.
I’ll regret this tomorrow…

I've never had anything but excellent, unobtrusive service at Dakshin. Dined with women and several races besides Indian and never have been treated any different. The employees have always been more than willing to describe their dishes and talk about food but nothing more...

(of course I don't go there talking to them about other things like if I'm married or have house work to do)

lol

I'll second that. We love it and have always been warmly received. The best Indian cuisine in this town IMO.

ditto. We've eaten there a lot. And if you want your food Indian hot, then ask for it Indian hot. I've said, "Make it the way you'd make it at home." That nearly killed me, and I like hot food. I've asked for "Mad Indian hot" and that was plenty fiery also.Service for us at DakShin has always been prompt and courteous.
