Good deep dish or Chicago style pizza?

by Adam Smith » Sat Feb 27, 2010 7:02 pm

I'm not a huge fan of deep dish but I thought I'd have some tonight. :D

I've had Uno's and the Chicago place at Stonybrook and didn't care for either place, anywhere make a really good deep dish?

3rd for Windy City! Both the thin crust and deep dish are very good.

New Albanian Pizzeria & Pub - the Grantline Rd location makes 3 excellent deep dish pies

Refrigerator - thin crust, deep dish, twice the toppings, twice the cheese
Upside Down - square thick crust with the sauce on top
Roundhouse - traditional thick crust pie

lately, i've been on a Roundhouse kick !

At the risk of ticking off the chain haters amongst us, I'll put a vote in for Old Chicago. They serve a very competent "Chicago Style" thick crust pizza,...MOF, I'll stir the pot and go so far as to say that ANY of their pizzas can hold their own against (or in some cases beat the hell out of) most of the ballyhooed "local" pizza we've tried...oh and they serve 110 different beers.

He tried Old Chicago and didn't care for it, Steve.

Personally, I think you would need 110 beers to get one of their pizza's down the hatch.

I''ll stand by my vote for Old Chicago...but I do apologize for sounding so snarky in my previous reply to this thread. I can't think of a single dish that can hold a candle to Pizza in terms of personal taste and preferences. Everyone has their favorites...and I'm sure most of us have had (I know we have) the experience where we've known people to rave about certain pizza joints, only to visit them and be disappointed.

Wholeheartedly agree with you, Steve. Great we have so much pizza variety in the Ville!

NABC has been on my must try list but I haven't made it over there yet. I had NO idea Windy City even existed. That'll be the destination this next weekend. Tonight we went to ZA's and it was excellent as usual. We almost went to Impellizeri's to try the Sicilian deep dish but $20 for a 2 topping small seemed steep even for a deep dish.

I'm a fan of Za's pizza, but the service can be... in-different to put it mildly.

I need to revisit Old Chicago and have their pizza when it is not on the buffet. An ALWAYS terrible thing thing to do when judging a pizza for the first time.

Another vote for Windy City.

Old Chicago is OK if you've never had the original (Uno's, Due's, Giordano's, I can go on & on), but can't compare head to head.

BJ's in Oxmoor is the only other place in Louisville that can come close; not as good as Windy City, but better than Old Chicago (and their beer if OK too).
