Next movie of the Week: Tartar sauce addiction!

I have a a confession to make:

I am a tartar sauce addict.

Sure, it started innocently enough. A packet from White Castle for the fish bombs with cheese at 3:00 A.M. after a night of liquid refreshment. A smear on the whitefish sandwich at Kingfish. Buying the odd jar or two from Frisch's or Mike Linnig. But then I started noticing the texture, color, flavor notes. Chopped sweet relish or onion? Dill or parsley? Chunky or ultra smooth with barely a hint of anything except the base.

Then the experimentation. What else is it good on? French fries, onion rings, fried bologna sandwichs, ribs, steaks where will the madness end? Well, it never does.

They say the only way to get help is to admit you need help. So, I'm asking for help.

Help me find the best tartar sauce in Louisville. My personal all time favorite (right now at least ) is at The Fish House at Barret and Winter. Nothing goes better with that Green River style than their sauce. Just a hint of pickle and a good smooth finish.

So share. Whose got the best in your opinion?

Are you a purist? They have a pretty nice red pepper tarter at Cumberland Brews. Otherwise, I love it at Frisch's and Mike Lennings as well.

Oh, I lived out west for a few years and was horrified to discover that in Nevada they put thousand island dressing instead of tarter sauce on the Big Boy Burger.

I gotta admit that I prefer the dill flavored Tarter over the sweet version. I do like the stuff they have at Frich's. I keep a jar around to make tasty Tuna or Chicken Salad with. It adds a flavor that most people recognize but can't quite put thier finger on.

My favorite in town in definitely Hill Street Fish Fry's. I am there almost every Firday for a tarter sauce and fried fish sandwitch. They make it in house, and if you like your tarter sauce sweet you'll love it. It's located on the corner of Hill and Brook and worth a lunch or/and dinner visit.

I do believe I picked up on that in my review of your place:

Tartar sauce is excellent on burgers and as a dipping sauce for fries.

It's also really good on a ham and cheese sandwich, á la the Champ sandwich at Jerry's or the Buddy Boy at Frisch's.

I have to admit I'm an addicted to the stuff too! My fav has to be Friches as well. I blame it on my Mom because she said that when she was pregnant w/ me that's all she craved! She was actually eating a Big Boy when she went into labor with me! Love it on fries the best.
Now that I'm alittle sweet on Bistro New Albany, I will have to check Dave's out!

Fish House has a jalapeno version that is outstanding. Also the Ramsi version on the Selma's is kicking with capers!

I love theirs! I was a Service Trainer for Frisch's when I first moved here and became so enamoured with it, I served it at my wedding supper along with the bread they used to have (thick square slices - not the same now!). This was before they sold it by the pint, so I had to get my regional VP's permission to buy some. I have tried to duplicate it, came close, but not there yet.

Congratulations to Mr. Clancy of Bistro New Albany for the definitive tartar sauce. Capers! Had an incredible grouper sandwich at Bistro New Albany today, perfect fish but THAT SAUCE!!!! Bottle it, man! See you again soon.

Ed, I must ask, was it the battered grouper? I was there last week and it was a toss up between that and the burger, opted for the burger. It didn't disappoint, but I knew I should have gotten the fish!!! Did you have the fries? Wonderful, but you don't get enough of them!
