Texican's BBQ - A Rockin' Good Lunch

by Steve P » Wed Feb 24, 2010 2:22 pm

Like most people, I normally associate BBQ with lazy summer days but despite the lack of summer like temps we've been experiencing I've had a Jones on for some good BBQ for the past few days. To address this craving I stopped in to Texican's BBQ on Hwy 146 in Crestwood for lunch yesterday.

I've got to admit that with the exception of the (now defunct) Pig City I've found most of the local BBQ to be pretty pedestrian. So as a result of past experience my expectations weren't all that high when I walked into Texican's for lunch yesterday. To say I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. In a word, the BBQ at Texican's ROCKS.

I enjoyed a "combo platter" of Beef Brisket, Pulled Pork, Mac and Cheese and Baked Beans (with a side sample of their smoked sausage). Without going into excessive detail let me just say that everything was cooked spot on perfect. The brisket and pork was moist and smokey and the "burnt ends" included with the brisket were an added bonus. The sides were very tasty and well prepared. The Mac and Cheese in particular was very good...definitely not box-like. The real star of the meal though was the smoked sausage which they have imported from "out of town"...The stuff is just awesome.

Those of you who rarely venture outside the Watterson would be well served to apply for the appropriate passport visa and enjoy a meal at Texican's. The BBQ is outstanding, the service very pleasant and the prices are very wallet friendly (for example most sandwiches run $3.99-$4.99).

Bone Appetite.

I live just down 146 from Texican's and have driven past it several times. I generally have trouble getting past Jucy's to go to another BBQ place, but I might have to steel my will, sneak past Jucy's and give Texican's a try.

Chris,

I've had -ok- BBQ at Jucy's but never -great- BBQ...Every time I've visited everything (including the sides) have been WAY over cooked...most likely from spending most of the day in the warming oven. The BBQ I enjoyed at Texican's the other day was definitely better than any other local BBQ I've tried.

Speaking of Texican Rock...

I've been craving BBQ too lately. That's quite a drive for me, but I'll try to make it out this weekend sometime. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it!

Paul,

Make sure you get your passport stamped before venturing out past the Watterson. Drop me a P.M. and I'll meet ya there and buy ya lunch...we'll call it an advance copay toward a future surgical procedure of some kind (once ya get all checked out in the doctorin' profession). :D

Bob and I stopped in Texican's today for lunch and had really, really good bbq and sides. We both had the pulled pork with slaw, roasted new potatoes & onions, baked beans and mac & cheese. Everything was excellent. Brought brisket home for dinner! We had been a number of times when they had the trailer but this was our first visit to the restaurant. Definitely worth the short trek to Oldham County.

I love Texicans. I've tried to get some buzz started on HB for them before.

Maybe this thread will get some interest started. IMHO it is WAY better smoked meat than Jucy's.

Ohhhhh we're gonna do an offline BBQ this spring/summer...at our house...and I'm doing the cookin'. We're trying to figure out a good date...we were going to do something pre-Derby on April 3rd and then I realized (duh) that that was Easter weekend. Soooo, we're probably looking at Memorial Day (that'll give me a chance to get that old fridge off the porch and that 74 Monte Carlo in the front yard up on new blocks).

Mark,

If you're driving through Crestwood toward Louisville on Hwy 146 it is on your left just about the time you leave Crestwood. It's set back off the road just a wee bit (50-60 feet) in an older converted house. It's on that stretch of road between the new elementary school and the place where you get your drivers license if that tells ya anything (I'm not up to speed on landmarks yet).
