Anybody check out the new Fresh Market today?

by Mary Anne » Wed Feb 03, 2010 6:20 pm

Wondering what the impressions were...bigger, better than the one out towards Middletown? Anything different the other doesn't have?

I didn't realize it was opening day-- but I think the rest of Louisville realized it was! Packed, w/ lots of people looking for freebies. Store is almost identical to one in Bonita Springs, larger than Moser rd store. Good looking produce , and a helpful staff. :D

I walked there with my youngest. It was packed, but since they appeared to have the entire staff working, service was smooth and efficient. They gave my son a "cookie club" card for a free cookie with each visit...that might be trouble.

Stopped in tonight...Nothing special. If you like the one on Shelbyville Rd, you'll like this one. Same size, same stuff, same prices.

great fish dept, and knowledgeable fish monger . . . prepared soups sound great, but all had 800+ mg salt, which puts them out of my budget .. . . produce looked very good, with some unusual items . . . same for spices . . . bagels were the Louisville standard (rolls with holes in the center, not boiled then baked) . . . will definitely go for fish and bakery, tho I personally like Whole Foods better (more selections)

I like the selection of bakery cookies and pies. I like shopping local bakeries but sometimes, usually around 7PM and you're rushing out for something to take to a friend TFM is a great option.
I also like the idea of bulk spices. (oh if only Nuts and Stuff were closer to me!)

In Louisville tradition, it's where the Ramada Inn (and other brands later) at I264 and Brownsboro Rd used to be.

stopped in yesterday about 3 to buy a cake for my dad's birthday. Ran into someone I knew, and they were surprised I was buying a cake instead of making one. They have a "sinful white cake" that is just delish.

It seemed that it was senior day at Fresh Market yesterday too! I have never seen so many well dressed, and coiffed seniors in one place at one time before.

They were grilling ribs, and giving out samples of ice cream, crab cakes, breads, and other yummies too.

Yesterday (the grand opening) was packed. The parking lot was full all day. (I live in the neighborhood and pass the location several times a day.) Today, the crowd has died down a little bit....the parking lot was about 1/3 full at 11:00 but picked up again around afternoon rush hour. Great deli, butcher shop, seafood and produce. You don't want to go there for everyday staple items.....a little expensive.

We live within walking distance, so I was pretty excited.

However, Fresh Market has some pretty major problems. They carry very few local products. Doll's, Paul's, and even Whole Foods have multiple "Kentucky Proud" labels; Fresh Market has few. They don't have much in the way of grass-fed or pastured meat or diary, or even organic for that matter. Their prices are way out of line with the quality...it feels like Kroger quality at Whole Foods prices. Lastly, and in my mind this is a really bad problem, their bread is HORRIBLE. I don't mean that it's not good for the price; I mean that it's bad at any price. The way they bill themselves, it should be in line with Blue Dog. Instead, what they called a baguette was a structureless, soft loaf that compared unfavorably to Kroger.

So, we'll go there if we run out of something or need a prepared item at the last minute, but overall, other than distance from my house, it's not that great.

You read my mind. The prices on their fruit are highway robbery, $12 for a lb of blueberries. Are you kidding me? I bought a loaf of pumpkin bread and ate one slice, horrible.

The rotisserie meats are killer. My favorite chicken wings at the moment.

Any particular flavor? They looked fantastic when I was last there, but I became irritated from everyone trying to "sell" me something and left.
