Gasthaus on wait last weekend

by Ellen P » Fri Jan 22, 2010 1:46 pm

We stopped in last Sat. Hadn't made reservations. Will try again, but glad to see a restaurant full. I know it is small but...
We ended up at Mojitos. First time. We always passed them up to go to Havana Rumba, a fav of my husband's. Glad we did. They were on a wait also but it was a shorter wait.
While we waited, we sat at the bar. I can see us stopping in and having a margarita and a tapas or 2 frequently.
Should make those Gasthaus reservations....or keep stopping by until we get it right. They open at 6:00 pm, Tues. - Sat., I believe.

Erika's as noted is very good as well. But you want to go to Gasthaus, and you should since it is not to be missed. But you can forget ever getting in without a reservation in a realistic time. We've been going off and on for maybe 15 years and you have to make a reservation to just get a shorter 15 - 30 minute wait. Seriously. We've been in the middle of the week and it was the same. Sometimes a reservation will luck you out to just a few minutes wait but it is a really popular place for a good reason.

We called ahead Friday night and were seated a few minutes ahead of time. Looked like the only open table.
We created our own little buffet: 2 entrees, rouladen and stroganoff - we wanted beef - and 4 different sides. 2 came with the meal. Even the red cabbage is different - almost like the homemade cranberry sauce with alittle orange but cinnamon/nutmeg added? We had 2 desserts to sample. 1 beer each. Took food home. $93 plus tip.
So we had another meal each plus 1 other meal part, so we divide the $93 by 5 meal parts. I have to do this to justify spending a weekly grocery bill on one meal.
Pleasant experience. Just what I wanted that night. Expensive but good. Thankyou.

I'm thrilled your experience was positive at Gasthaus. They've been turning out good food for over 25 years in this city and have been a fixture. I tip my hat to their dedication and commitment. If you'd ever like to try Erika's, http://www.allmenus.com/ky/jefferson-southeast/4305-erikas-german-restaurant/menu/ then here is their menu. She's a wonderful woman and am excited there are two SOLID German Cuisine diners in this area.

I am not sure; only aware of their location on Hurstborne Ln. Perhaps she moved from Shelbyville?

If you are up for a drive there is some fine German food in Jasper, IN. They have been in business for nearly 50 years.

Erika worked out at a German place on the square in J-town 25 years ago. I think she went on to open her own place in Shelbyville later and for the past several years has been down on Hurstbourne.

Ah..the gas station restaurant. Since we've lived in Simpsonville it's gone from a BBQ place to a Mexican restaurant. The Mexican place had an A on the door and was mediocre at best. I was afraid to see too far into the kitchen as it looked run down and scary.
Sorry, I know that's way off topic..but it's surprising how many places have been there.

My building had a Biergarten fest back in the fall, and had Schnitzelbank do the catering. It was pretty good, though I'm sure hauling it from Jasper may have decreased it's goodness a bit. I'd like to try the restaurant itself.

It's some of the best German food I've had in a while . . . great beers on tap (if I remember, all German imports), authentic dishes, and if you want even more authenticity they'll make it "your way" (eg: adding a fried egg to make any veal dish "a la Holstein").

If you're at the restaurant and look in the back, there is a building even bigger than the (huge) restaurant with around 20 catering trucks surrounding it, ranging from 4 to 6 to 18 wheels!
