Vienna Beef and Sabrett Hot Dogs

by Steve P » Thu Jan 07, 2010 2:48 am

Maybe it's the Super Bowl coming up but I am developing a serious Jones for some good hot dogs. Is there a store in the local area that sells Vienna Beef or Sabrett hot dogs ? Note: I want to cook my own, not buy them from a hot dog stand.

Maybe Lonnies would sell you a pack of uncooked Vienna dogs.

Not local, but http://www.nyhotdog.com/index.html has them, plus some other NY goodies.

I could order some Vienna's for you wholesale but the smallest quantity I could get is the 10# case they normally come in. The Best"s Kosher dogs they sell at the GFS Marketplace are pretty tasty and garlicy and I feel a close second to those, but they come in a 5# pack!
I'm sure I'll get all sorts of detractors because loyalties run deep for hot dog brands  but for my money, you can't do much better than a Ball Park Grill Master Frank IMHO.
They won out in a taste test I saw in Cook's Illustrated a few years back!

I also personally like Nathan's and Hebrew National over a Vienna Beef dog any day!
Let the games begin

Before the games begin in earnest, I'd probably take #3 of a #10 pound case...Anyone else ? Mr Hagen ?...Anyone ? Anyone ? Beuhler ?

Not saying these aren't good dogs...I'm just kinda burnt out on 'em and am looking for something a bit different.

Of the "available anywhere" brands I'm kinda partial to the Echrich Premium. Great dog.

Don't know about vendors, Steve, but I'm pretty sure that Lonnie's has Vienna Beef. You also ought to chat up the guy at Conez and Coneyz on Frankfort and see where he gets his "snap dogs" from. Dunno the brand, but they're the real deal.

Yeah,Steve Id go in with you on some Viennas. Otherwise I would suggest talking to Lonnies as suggested. Agree with Dan that Best Kosher are close to a Vienna style dog. Never been a big fan of the Sabrett dogs. I would see them around the city(Chicago) but it always seemed like I was being unfaithful if I got one. If you end getting the Vienna dogs just remember its against the law if you dont use poppy seed buns and celery salt. Oh yeah one more thing Steve Pee, its spelled Hagan not Hagen.
Any thought about the use of neon green relish...I love it.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

I would take part of the box if you go that route.

Ok guys, let me know if you're serious on this one... I have a couple of options for you as well. There are a few different sizes of dogs but they are all the same flavor profile!
I can get 6" 8 to1# sized or I can get 6" 5 to 1# sized. Either way they are $43.52 for the 10 lb. case. I could portion them up into 5-2 lb. bags (that would make them $8.70 per bag) so you can divvy them up easier if you like. I would prefer if one person stepped up and bought the case and then collected from the others. Just get all the heads together and let me know!

Dan,

I'd be good for 2 bags (#4) of the 8 dogs per pound variety (I'm not into the big fellers). Can't pay you until I get back into town next week.

I'm good for the 43 and change...but I'm out of town for another couple of days. We'll make it work.

No problem. You prefer the 8 to 1's, I'll go on and order them for you. No big rush, just let me know when you get back to town and I'll hook up with you!
