Where have you been lately?

by Mark Head » Fri Dec 04, 2009 3:46 pm

Just a prop to a few of the places we've dined in the past 3 or 4 weeks.

Simply Thai - really good spice! (we went 3 times before we could get a table)
Irish Rover - the lamb stuffed cabbage is fabulous
Jack's Lounge - the fried chicken is great, I love the smokey greens (Gary we missed you)
Goose Creek Diner - solid in every way
Le Relais - we went on duck confit night, best steak and frites in town.
Tokyo - our home sushi place
La Perla del Pacifico - great fried whole fish
Bombay Grill - close 2nd behind Dakshin and much less of a drive

8 meals over 3-4 weeks and not a lemon in the bunch

Great steak sandwich from Boombozz Sunday.
Tasty falafel at Monkey Wrench Wednesday.
Nice, savory Broccoli Cheddar scones this morning at Cake Flour.

Randomly, I can think of:

1. The Oakroom
2. Cokos Lokos
3. Cumberland Brews
4. Boombozz Taphouse (takeout twice)
5. Cafe Lou Lou Highalnds (delivery twice in the past month)
6. Z's Fusion (apps/drinks)
7. Asiatique (apps/drinks)

We're going to Palermo Viejo tomorrow, brunch at North End on Sunday, and then Rivue next Friday.

Cocos Lokos - empanadas, calamari, wings, and steak were all good.
Simply Thai - dine in and carryout pad thai and spring rolls
Bourbons - drinks and apps - great apps, so so service
60 West - drinks and app - great warm goat cheese, dirty martini, and service
My Patria - my go to "real" taco spot
Richos - pizza and beer
Comfy Cow - dulche ice cream is fantastic

Westport W&W tonight for Bell's beer tasting with Hiko Sushi to follow and if there is still room more comfy cow.

Cocos Lokos - Very good new entry. B@stard son of Havana Rumba?

La Catalana - Also enjoyable, although I kind of wish they had gone full-bore Catalan without mixing it up with other cuisines.

Coach Lamp - A couple of visits. Chef Richard Lowe is doing outstanding Cajun/Creole. I wish I had figured out earlier what was going on at this urban jewel after Jerome Pope left.

Otto's at the Seelbach. I had to try the hamburger that their PR people promoted with such great huzzahs. It was good, not great. The lobby construction going on, although it will yield great results eventually, makes the scene rather unpleasant now. Service was very slow in an almost empty dining room, particularly for something billed as an "Express Lunch."

Caffe Classico - Our go-to place for quiet Sunday afternoons with the NY Times. This place has become so much more than just a coffee shop, and - watch for it - it's growing soon into adjoining space and becoming much more of a dining destination. One of my favorites.

Simply Thai
Flannigans
O' Sheas
Ichiban Japanese restaurant

Those are just a few off the top of my head. I'll ad some more at a later date.

Volare- The arancinis are exceptional! My new favorite thing... Hospitality is top notch and saw Bim there the other night (I don't know him, but I do come from that generation...)

Bourbon's Bistro: After dinner drink. Just go in and have the barkeeps pick you one! That night, we enjoyed Wathen's!

Varanese: Stupid late, walked in 2 minutes to close and were treated like royaly. They will keep them doors open as long as the state allows them to do so.

Jade Palace: need I say more?

Ma Patria: Like Justin said, the go-to taqueria.

Golden Corral: This boy gets hungry! I also wanted to test out my philosophy about service. The food is mediocre: decent homestyle, but under-salted and acidulated. No doubt for the clientele. The point being, my waitress, who filled my tea twice, knew every guest at every table around me... and so did the next server (I sat in a corner to watch.) It seemed she was a member of thier church or something! I tipped her $10 on a $10 bill. Screw the snobby captain, I'll take the enthusiasic buffet server anyday!

Seviche: Lamas is bold, what more can I say? I was treated to an advance tasting of a house-made bitters they work with. It was funny to me that this early macerated bitters kinda reminded me of a really good spiced rum. Hmmm, how bout that?

Asiatique: Oh boy, they had these Gyoza wrappers with portobello. I kinda had to step back and rethink the concept. Gyoza/potsickers generally are marked by that char, that bitter element. This dish took it in an entirely new direction. Pretty exciting, to me! I was entertaining a mixologist from Vancouver and he was impressed, as well. They made me look really good! I was given the honor of a kitchen visit and found that Looi works that window. They are making some great looking plates there, that's for sure.

Upcoming:

Westport General Store: Rafael, the new chef is bringing his own Cubano interpretation...

Social: Just because!

Classico: Robin tends to be right and I am behind on this joint.

Meridian Cafe: Cause I saw Heather Y tonight and it reminded me how much I miss that corned beef dish that I love so much (seriously, I order it every time! Haven't gotten past that dish, lol.)

Las Gorditas - pastor burrito, asada tacos

Cumberland Brews - bison burger, two beers

Flanagan's - Their "pint night" special burger, with roasted red pepper and brie; also a Bell's Christmas Ale and Bell's Expedition Stout

Dakshin - lunch buffet

This, it's halfway between work and home, and an easy walk when I want lunch there.

Queen of Sheba for some excellent something, I have no idea what. Lentils and lamb were involved and it was delicious.

Haven't been getting up to O'Shea's or Flanagan's as much lately for various reasons, but I still try to get up there enough to still be a regular.

White Oak-Who knew something as simple as a brussel sprout could be soooo goood. Pear infused Woodford Reserve with Bread pudding was the perfect ending. Excellent meal!

Chez seneba-Been trying to go here for years and finally made it. They have daily specials and our meal was fresh and abundant but just so so. I must have went on a bad day. Will definitely return.

Suburban Lodge Third street Fish Fry- Saturdays only. Now closed for winter. Best "Green river style" in town, plus you can buy it by the pound. Good bake sale inside as well.

O'Bryans- Dive Bar off Dixie with the Best Fish sandwich in town. Fresh and no frills. Cole slaw how KFC used to be when it was good.

Shiraz on Poplar Level- not into it. I'll go back to Al Watan.

Thornberry's Deli- Best Ham in town. Awesome pies plus potato chip cookies and these one cookies called "Treasures" are the best.

Pretty much all the joints we have had the pleasure to eat at lately have been in the "cheap eats" category.
Bosna Mak--some of the best gyros in town
Charlestown Pizza Company--great pizza/beer fun and very clean worth the drive
DCE--service with a sneer
La Tapatia--huge burritos great gorditas and sopes
Tacos Torendos--Juan makes some fine tacos
AJ;s gyros--its closer than you think, looking forward to the fish and chips
La Rosita Carnacita--my new favorite taco joint
Al Waton--another contender for top gyros
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

Cafe Lou Lou - Gyro roll with cajun chips - very good!

Homemade Ice Cream & Pie Kitchen - Carrot Cake - good!

Tea Station Chinese Bistro - Beef & Pepper (added mushrooms) very good! They also bring out little stands to sit by your table and put your purse on, I thought that was neat and very thoughtful.

Roasted Joe's (Shepherdsville)- very good bbq pork sandwich on pretzel roll! (Had my husband stop by there on his way home from work for take out...from the menu looks like mostly sandwiches, long list though) Waffle fries were good according to the husband....I don't know they were gone by the time I got to my sandwich.

Ole Hickory Pitt BBQ - their smoked chicken is my favorite, but the riblets are running a close second! Add green beans and baked bbq beans and of course their fried cornbread (this does not come with the meal it is listed as a side . I just saw it on the list last week don't know how I could have missed it)....a perfect meal!!!!

Attention: Steve P: if you and Becky haven't been to Ole Hickory Pitt you should give it a try! :D
